Korean national music, the music I missed
My music life started from western music that I encountered by chance during childhood, and I learned Korean national music thanks to the teaching from a relative, which became the life-long subject in my music life.
Thirty years has passed already since I dreamed of becoming a Korean national music composer.
A number of musicians and music pieces that I met while working as a middle school music teacher and producer of KBS FM, made my life full of rich experiences and based on them, I was able to compose pieces that contain our traditional music sentiments.
I always made efforts to make songs with life force of Korean language as well as Korean sentiments within the framework of Korean national music that I sought for. Looking back the thirty years that I spent as a composer, here I humbly present pieces that I composed at odd moments.
This album collected ten vocal pieces release through albums and performances so far. These are pieces that I tried to contain sentiments of Korean people through Korean language and traditional musical usage.
These pieces lack many things to be released as an album, but I dared to do it since I want to renew my resolution and reinforce my strong confidence to compose modern Korean national music in earnest that matches Korean musical usage, on occasion of this album.
Last but not least, I would like to express my appreciation to song writers for allowing me to use their wonderful lyrics, Seoul Records for allowing me to use precious music sources, and those who are related with performances. Lastly, I would like to give my special thanks to all the people who sang the songs, vitalizing each piece and melody.
I sincerely hope that all of you keep paying attention to, criticizing and encouraging me in working on Korean traditional music composition that will continue.
Regards,
September 2006
Chae Chi-Sung

Escaping from the West, Heading forward the Korean
- Composer Chae, Chi-Sung -
Yun, Jung-Gang/Music Critic
Mr. Chae Chi-Sung? musical world is clear. It can be summarized in four words-Heading forward the Korean. There is no stir at all. His music is deeply rooted into the Korean traditional music. Let us remind three of his most representative pieces. You can see what they are like as soon as you hear , a Gugak popular song, , a solo piece, , an orchestration piece. He has always been loyal to tradition in composing, rather than making experimental pieces. He takes pride in himself as a composer of traditional music. Therefore, it is not right for him to follow the rules of western music.
Set a standard of Radio Gugak Programs
Chae Chi-Sung majored in composition at Korean traditional music department, music college in Seoul National University, and majored in conduction in the graduate school of Chung-Ang University. Despite this educational background, Mr. Chae never boasts of his academic knowledge as composer. He never adopts difficult musical methods, just looking for the most comfortable way to communicate with public. His efforts to create pieces at the level of ordinary people are attributable to long-time experiences as broadcasting producer and master of ceremonies. Since he joined KBS FM as PD, he has directed Korea traditional music programs mostly(November 2, 1981 ~ May 3, 1995). It is not too much to say that ?heerful Hanmadang (big stage), the earliest Korean traditional music program that has continued so far, is another masterpiece of Chae Chi-Sung. At that time, ?heerful Hanmadang was synonymous with Korean traditional music program, which set a standard of radio Gugak progra! m. He directed this program for a long time and had to be engaged in this program as a DJ even after he quit the broadcasting company.
To add one more, although he directed this type of Gugak programs, Mr. Chae used to direct pop music programs for some time such as ?orean pop music promenade with Lee Geum-Hee and ?orean Pop Song Stage of Maeng Gwan-Yeong. During that period, he always selected songs that matched sensitivity of public, and provided chances to encounter ?ugak popular songs from time to time.
While he was working in KBS, he won many awards. To name a few, they include special programs like "84 ABU Ethnic Music Festival" (1985), "20-hour relay of Gugak Broadcasting" to celebrate Chuseok, Korean thanksgiving day(1986)", "Sound of blessing, Music of Celebration" (1988), etc. Moreover, he won the best prize in the World Ethnic Music Festival (1992), and the fourth Korean Broadcasting PD Award(1991).
You can easily find that he always sticks to orthodoxy in music selection or program directing. Sometimes he lacks the delicate skill of deviation, sticking to the orthodox method. He completed military service as marine, and used to work as a music teacher in Mirim Girls Middle School. These experiences seem to have been applied to the way of his life and music composition.
It is not easy find that he always chose the right way from listening to the programs he worked as facilitator. The way he takes interview was not different. He makes questions within the range of format set before, and if you listen to him more carefully, he speaks Korean appropriately and accurately. To add one more, he was the facilitator who provided more chances for interview rather than talking more.
Song, the basic of Korean traditional music
It seems like that his deep interests in songs were gained naturally during his long-time broadcasting career. He took the right steps as Korean traditional music composer. He is not composing instrumental music pieces, focusing on vocal pieces more. He often says that instrumental music is a realm of performers who can deal with the music better. Meanwhile, he devotes himself to composition with a concentrated mind to vocal pieces that modern composers are less interested. Therefore, his pieces serve as something invisible but inevitable, just like water and air.
In Mr. Chae? pieces seeking for tradition like this, Korean rhythm can be found as well along with Korean melodies. Korean traditional rhythms like Jungmori, Jajinmori, and Gutgeori are underlying in the pieces of Chae Chi-Sung, just like sketch of picture. Some might get impression of triteness from these rhythms, but I believe that we have to internalize these as the language of body.
is the most representative piece of Mr. Chae. With triple counts similar to Jungmori, this song is regarded as a classic of Gugak popular songs. Since it was broadcasted through ?M Gugak Stage, KBS FM in 1988, it has been loved by many Gugak enthusiasts. All the singers who work as vocal in Gugak area might sing this song more than once. In the album titled with Chae Chi-Sung Selection (1992), the vocal of this song is Ju, Byeong-Seon.
One of the most representative repertories of Seulgidung, a Gugak chamber ensemble, was as well, and this piece became popular through Gang Ho-Jung. This song is related with Korean typical maternity along with , an orally-transmitted song.
If you are a composer thinking of Korean traditional music, it is impossible not to think of Arirang. Mr. Chae has , which is played on the basis of three counts, similar to Jungmori. Yang Hee-Eun, a famous Korean pop singer, wrote the lyrics. People familiar to typical code of popular music can easily listen and sing along with this song.
Additionally, Mr. Chae composed , another variation of Arirang composed on the basis of structure of folk songs, so that everybody can feel sympathy.
His interests in songs or Gugak pop songs were expanded to Buddhist hymns, a kind of modern Buddhist music. He wrote a thesis for mater? degree analyzing Buddhist hymns, composing them actually. This can be interpreted as an effort to escape from Christian hymns with western colors. With a series of Buddhist hymns he composed, maybe he wants to create hymns that do not get out of Korean traditional melodies and rhythms and therefore, that Korean people can be deeply sympathized.
Additionally, he composed a song over Dokdo Island, titled as . He connects the story of Manpashikjeok in Shilla, one of the three ancient kingdoms in Korea, to guardians of Dokdo Island, which is a politically sensitive issue between Korea and Japan.
Songs of Mr. Chae are easy to sing, but vocals with outstanding talents shed more light on it. Gang Ho-Jung, Ju Byeong-Seon, and Jeon Myeong-Shin are the very singers. Gang Ho-Jung burst into tears while singing , because the song reminded him of his mother. , sung by Ju Byeong-Seon, is a song that can offer a chance to get more familiar to Gugak or Gugak instruments for those who are accustomed to trot music. Jeon Myeong-Shin, called as female Jang Sa-Ik(a famous male singer), revealed her ability to cover all the musical factors including folk songs, pop songs and pansori, while singing Chae Chi-Sung? songs that have to be expressed with deep emotions and appealing impressions.
Moreover, it should be noted that all of them are excellent in playing musical instruments. Gang Ho-Jung majored the piri(Korean flute), Ju Byeong-Seon majored the percussions, and Jeon Myeong-Shin majored in daeguem(Korean large flute made of bamboo). Then, what about Chae Chi-Sung? He was interested in buk, played as accompaniment of pansori, and trained a lot to finally become a pansori accompanist with buk. He loves rough and humble buk, rather than sophisticated janggu. His free and easy musical mind is explicitly revealed in , which he arranged.
However, his musical interests are not just for folk songs or popular songs with traditional expressions. Pieces like and will make you feel his will to put together traditional songs and modern songs along with Gugak musical instruments.
Korean language and music came out of the same roots
Most of all, the virtue found in Chae Chi-Sung? songs is that Korean usage is fully applied to the usage of Korean music. His songs are easy to listen and strike the codes in the heart, even without striving hard to understand the lyrics.
These days, many forms of music repeat to appear and disappear. However, songs composed by Mr. Chae are different from them; his songs do not gain popularity instantly but became a favorite request song of radio listeners after a while. Just as people get back to homemade soup after enjoying various kinds of unusual dishes, Chae Chi-Sung definitely has his existence among dazzling and flowery sensitivity. He won Korean Composer Award(1993) and composer award from KBS Gugak Grand Prize (1999).
can be regarded as a piece that his musical talents are concentrated, which was first played at the 111st regular concert of KBS Gugak Orchestra. This piece is rooted from ancient ritual for the Heaven, expressing power and morale of Korean people. He seemed to pay attention to orchestration of Korean traditional musical instruments. This piece was spotlighted in the first performance, and is being played continuously. As a matter of fact, Mr. Chae would create a number of masterpieces like this, if only he concentrated on composition. Then, I think, Korean traditional music can form a decent framework as ?ational music. However, he is, unfortunately, always busy.
Since the establishment of Gugak Broadcasting Company, Chae Chi-Sung has been always with the company, and currently serving as head of Broadcasting Headquarter in Gugak Broadcasting Company. As a main executive leading a broadcasting company, and as a man taking care of many friends and colleagues, he is busy and pressed with many works today.
