Letter of Recommendation

It is a hard job to accomplish one thing with all of his efforts and concentration.

Choe Chanhwan, not only as a public school¡¯s teacher but also as an amateur musician, has been fascinated by daegeum, and reached in a class of his own.

He is more enthusiastic than any others, and already surprised many professional players.

I know there¡¯s no easy musical instruments. However, daegeum can be told as one of the hardest. Even I had many chances that I felt like stopping the instrument. Therefore, here I praise all of his efforts and patience.

The musics included in this album are not easy in an amateur¡¯s level. What it means is that he already jumped up to the professional level beyond the basic. I only wish another greate result for the next album by his continuous efforts.

June 2017

Jo Changhun(Illan)

1. Sangryeongsan(ß¾ÖÄߣ)

Sangryeongsan is the first piece of whole suite music of Pyeongjohoesang. It usually consists of an orchestra format. From early 1900s, its melody was played one octave lower than its original melody.

Usually this song is taught to students at the end of lessons due to its complicated and profound melody. Therefore, precise and dedicate techniques are required for players for this song.

In Sangryeongsan, there are 4 sub-chapters. However it may vary according to players.

2. Suyeonjangjigok(áøæÅíþñýÍØ)

It is often called ¡°Dodeuri¡±. This music is usually used for dance accompaniments in the royal court during Joseon dynasty under the name of ¡°Jangchunbullojigok¡±. There are two kinds of dodeuri: Mittodeuri and Wittodeuri, consists of 7 sub-chapters.

It is of a pentatonic scale, and the tempo is moderate. Melody is pretty decorative in a large size of the orchestra. Instruments are usually used to play this song such as hyangpiri, daegeum, haegeum, gayageum, geomungo, ajaeng, jwago, janggo, and sogeum.

3. Junggwangjigok(ñìÎÃñýÍØ)

There are three kinds of Yeongsanhoesang suite music: Pyeongjohowsang, Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang, and Hyeonak Yeongsanhowsang.

Pyeongjohowsang is made usually for the wind instruments rather than string instruments. Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang is played mostly without string instruments such as: daegeum, piri, haegeum, ajaeng, and sogeum. The other one is Junggwangjigok, often called as ¡°Geomungo hoesang¡±.

It has been played for banquet music of the royal courts, and also for the aristocrats to play it as a hobby during Joseon dynasty. Rural district preserves their own unique or different styles. The suite consists of 9 sub-chapters such as Sangryeongsan, Jungryeongsan, Seryeongsan, Garakdeori, Sanghyeondodeuri, Hahyeondodeuri, Yeombuldodeuri, Taryeong, and Gunak. Also there¡¯s one special excerpt called ¡°Cheonnyeonmanse¡±, the music piece made in the end of whole suite.

4. Manpajeongsikjigok(Ø¿÷îïÎãÓñýÍØ)

It is often called ¡°Suyonamgeuk¡±. This song is one kind of the King¡¯s marching band music. Its melody has been brought from the Daechita with many instruments as Nagak, Napal, Jing, Taepyeongso, Buk, and Janggo. The original melody was adopted to play for the ensemble.

5. Byeonjo Dugeo(ܨðà ÔéËá)

Gagok, one of traditional vocal genre, includes many derivatives. Especially when the string instruments are not in the orchestra, and wind instruments are more emphasized such as daegeum or piri is called ¡°Sagwanpungnyu¡±. This song is included in that genre. When the melody is played in a higher pitch, it is called ¡°Dugeo¡±, and there are two types of Dugeo: Pyeongjo and Byeonjo.

6. Suryongeum(â©×£ëá)

A repertoire of Sagwanpungnyu. It shares its basic format with that of gagok. However, the rhythmic pattern and tempo may differ. It is mostly played for daegeum solo repertoire, and it is in one octave lower scale. It has a large significance for duet play with danso or sawnghwang.

7. Yocheonsuniljigok(èëô¸âïìíñýÍØ)

It has many nicknames such as ¡°Cheongsenggok¡±, ¡°Hoepalseon¡± or ¡°Chengseong Jajinhannip¡±. Its high and bright tone color is very much valued. This song is played not by the strict format of rhythmic patterns in accordance with the instrument player¡¯s ability.
