Jeseong is the a pen name of Song Hwaja presented by a Won Buddhist monk

 

 

It¡¯s already the end of the year 2016.

Namwon Jeseong Gayageum Society was established in 2009 as Gayageum players¡¯ music group.

The history of Gayageum has been undergone many stages since 1960 especially for music and instruments. For example, various kinds of modified Gayageum have been made such as 15 stringed, 17 stringed, 18 stringed, 21 stringed, and 25 stringed so far. Many music works were composed and played. However, in my personal idea, no work has been greater than its original 12 stringed sanjo music, yet.

In my personal life in Namwon city for about forty years, including my experiences of many competitions and performances, I¡¯d like to compile Gayageum music that I have wanted to. What I am very certain is that the music should be performed in original 12 stringed, and I believe it is the best way to represent Korean spirit, and it well-describes the heart-touching life of Korea.

Traditional music is not in a stable status, but is getting new by every seconds. Pansori has been made by many masters for 400 years. Especially, Chunhyangjeon consists upto 8 hours of story. Plus, there are classifications according to region such as Dongpyeonje, Seopyeonje or Dongchoje, designated by individual players. There are also many different versions in Sanjo music according to artists within 100 years of history. Such creative jobs in this field seem still continuous just like the sea: though it looks calm, we know there are full of vortexes beneath the surface.

Namwon Jeseong Gayageum Society tries to keep up its creativeness in traditional context.

The five music in this album were chosen in such meanings.

Although this is a small concert, your presence and encouragement will be very helpful for our future activities. Lastly but not least, I¡¯d like to appreciate the Chugye Gayageum players¡¯ Alumni members to join together for this concert.

2) Donghaebada

Gogocheonbyeon is one scene excerpted from . When the tortoise is coming out from underwater to the real world, he draws the beauty of natural environment.

Gaja Eoseoga is another scene from Sugungga. The rabbit finally succeeded to escape from the underwater palace on the tortoise¡¯s back.

Athough Donghaebada is sung in folksong style, there is a certain composer for this: Han Ilseop, the first pioneer of Ajaeng sanjo. The melody shares both Gyeongsangdo and Jeollado style together, which gives more dramatic fun.

 

2. Gim Byeongho style Gayageum sanjo

Gim Changjo is known as the first player of gayageum sanjo in history. After Gim Byeongho learned gayageum sanjo under Gim Changjo, he continued to develop his own style. Later he accomplished a big stream of his own. Gim Byeongho was good at Gayageum, and also a good player of Gayageum Byeongchang, Pansori, Ajaeng sanjo. No wonder his unique expressions are rarely seen in melodies of other players¡¯. The genuine taste of his melody is very tricky, which needs tremendous quantity of efforts to play his melody.

 

3. Sijo and Yukjabaegi

Pyeongsijo&Yukjabaegi

This is a newly created song with a lyric of Pyeongsijo into Byeongchang. Byeongchang is a musical genre in which the performer accompanies his or her own singing of folk songs or excerpts from the pansori repertoire on instruments such as gayageum, and geomungo. How can two different genres meet in one song? I attempted to match the two unsuitable genres.

 

4. Beyond the way we should go

To express a scene from a shaman ritual rite of Jeollado, Song Hwaja asked Yi Taebaek for a piece, and she re-interpreted the music. In a traditional texture, more dedicate and beautiful melodies were able to be expressed by gayageum.

The way every one should go, what would it be like?

May it guide us to that way.

 

5. Beyond the way we should go(solo)

Song Hwaja played this song again without other instruments to feel the difference between unison and solo. It was recorded later in Geoyeondang, Gim Cheongman¡¯s instruction center, located in Nonsan, Chungchengnamdo.
