Life and Pungryu of Master Seobong (ßõÜç), Hur Soon-gu (úÉâéÎú)
Yi Bo-hyeong(President, The Society of Korean Discology)
I. Life and Activities of Master Seobong as a well- known entrepreneur
Master Seobong, Heo Sun-gu, was born as the first child in 1903 to Sir Heo Yeong-man and Ma¡¯am Jo of Changryeong in Seungsanri, Jisumyeon, Jinju City, Gyeongsang Namdo. In the family tradition of being a rich land owner, Master Seobong studied mathematics and physics at Yeonhui College, a privileged opportunity given to wealthy young men. By 1927, at the age of 25, Master Seobong established a business empire when he opened, ¡°Munseongdang,¡± a modern department store located in Jinju City, Gyeongsang Namdo. During the Japanese colonial era a number of legendary businessmen and entrepreneurs were born in Jinju City and one of them is Hoam(ûÉäÜ) Yi Byeong-cheol(×ÝܼôÊ), who established and became president of the most powerful enterprise known today as Samsung. President Yi was a brother-in-law of Master Seobong, and together they thought that accumulating wealth and capital strength was the only way to restore the sovereignty of the nation. Considering his family background and surrounding environment in the newly booming industry, it was his fate to be a successful business owner.
Around 1938 Master Seobong and Hoam Yi Byeong-cheol together established Samsung Sanghoe, a general store which became the cornerstone of modern Samsung Cooperation. In 1950 Master Seobong moved and spent most of his rest of time in Daegu focusing on playing the pungryu repertoires of geomungo, founding Jeongakhoe, the Society for Classical Korean Music. He actively participated in the performances and was dedicated to help other musicians until his death in 1978 at the age of 76.
II. Activities of Master Seobong as a Geomungo Pungryu Musician
It is unknown exactly when and how Master Seobong begun to be interested in the music of geomongo pungryu. One assumption comes from his childhood growing up in the ¡°City of Arts,¡± Jinju, and understanding and appreciating the gallant and grandiose tastes of the sound of geomungo pungryu. It would have been natural to him to have been influenced by other surrounding musicians, friends and colleagues—the brothers of Hoam Yi Byeong-cheol were known to be connoisseurs and amateur musicians of the traditional performing arts. In particular, Master Seobong maintained a close friendship with Master Gisan, Bak Heon-bong, a legendary gayageum pungryu artist who was also the founder and teacher of Gugak Yesul Hakgyo, now known as National Gugak Arts School. Although being surrounded by the music and a musical environment from his youth through to the middle of his life, Master Seobong could not focus on and find the time to perform geomungo pungryu due to the busy schedule of managing his company. It was only later in life after retiring that he began to concentrate time to practice and learn geomungo pungryu.
The time of his retirement was around the late 1950s, and although the facts are not clearly known, it seems that Master Seobong began to take geomungo lessons from Gwon Hak-yeong (ÏíùÍç¶), who at that time served as the president of Jeongakhoe, the Society for Classical Korean Music in Daegu. Other ¡°assumed¡± master teachers of geomungo include Sin Eun-hyu (ãéëÚýÌ) of Eonyang and Choe Chang-ro (õËóãÖÕ) of Gyeongju, both of whom taught geomungo at Jeongakhoe at that time.
By the time Master Seobong joined the society, Jeongakhoe was in danger of being dismissed because of the considerable old age of many of its members. However, Master Seobong began to collect and invite new and younger members to revive the society, now with the new name, Pungryuhoe [Pungryu Society], centered at the Geumhojeong, his private villa located on the cliff side by the Geumho River.
During mid-1950s to early 1970s, due to his dedication and strong commitment, the society attracted a number of master stellar musicians, in addition to the regular members located in Daegu, including sijo masters Jeong Gyeong-tae and Yu Jong-gu of Jeollado, as well as pansori master Jeong Gwon-jin of Boseong. In this regard Master Seobong played several important roles, not only as the head of the society, but also as one of the most influential sponsors and patrons of Korean music and musicians. The activities of Master Seobong at Pungryuhoe continued until the early 1970s.
The articles left by Master Seobong include two musical instruments, geomungo and yanggeum, three manuscripts which he compiled, and sound sources of reel tape recordings of his own performances. The manuscripts have already been published as Seobonggugakbo (ßõÜçÏÐäÅÜÏ) with an extensive annotation prepared by the former director of National Gugak Center, Sir Yi Dong-bok. The CD presented in this volume is restored from Master Seobong¡¯s reel tape recordings.
III. Content and Pedigree of the Recording of Master Seobong
Probably the release of this of a commercial recording is far from Master Seobong¡¯s intention because he considered himself an amateur musician who enjoyed arts and leisure, as well as the music of pungryu, as many scholars and aristocrats did during the Joseon Dynasty. In consideration of that, the series of sound sources contained in this CD are commemorative recordings for personal use which allow us to hear a retrospective of his technical skill through the decades of his practice. In addition, we have the opportunity to hear the ensemble pieces performed at monthly and seasonal concerts with other pungryu musicians at the society.
Because reel tape recordings and recording equipment from the 1960s are extremely rare, the sound material introduced in this CD is indeed precious and valuable. The original reel tape recording had been carefully kept by the second son of Master Seobong, Hur Byung-chun, who with the help of the individuals who respect and admire the spirit of Master Seobong, made it available to the public by restoring it in CD format.
This CD introduces six pieces: three pieces are geomungo solo performances by Master Seobong on the selected repertories from Hyeonak Yeongsanhoesang; Cheongseonggok is performed on danso by Master Seobong; and two pieces are taken from the live chamber ensemble performances of Yeongsanhoesang and instrumental accompaniment of gagok, with the members of Daegu Jeongakhoe, presented at the seasonal and monthly concerts.
