Yeongsanhoesang (¿µ»êȸ»ó ÖÄߣüåßÓ)
Yeongsanhoesang is one of the representative Korean classical music. It had been performed as yeonak (æÃäÅ, music for banquets at court) of court music since Sejo (á¦ðÓ), the king of the early Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), in the mid-15th century. It has also been transmitted as one of the representative pungnyu (ù¦×µ, music for enjoyment, or music for appreciation or reception) repertories that is refined, profound, abstruse and fair. This music is probably the most regular genre that has been performing at yulbang (×ÈÛ®, room where pungnyu music is performed) of the upper class.

Yeongsanhoesang has been existed in three varied versions today, and they include Junggwanggog (ñìÎÃÍØ) of Geomungohoesang, Pyojeongmanbanggog (øúïáØ¿Û°ÍØ) of Saemyeonhoesang and Yuchosingog (׳ôøãæÍØ) of Pyeongjohoesang.

Geomungohoesang, also called 'Hyeonak-yeongsanhoesang', is mainly consisted of the stringed instruments and is supported by the woodwind instruments. It usually refers to Julpungnyu (úáäÅùêñ´ÍØ, 'jul' = string instruments) that fits to perform at indoor like rooms (Û®ñéäÅ) due to its greatly elegant and subtle sound. It is also called 'Wurimyeong (éë×úÖÂ)'. It is comprised of nine pieces which is similar to the suite in western music. They include Sangnyeongsan - Jungnyeongsan - Seryeongsan - Garakdeori - Sanghyeondodeuri - Hahyeondodeuri - Yeombuldodeuri - Taryeong - Gunak.

According to Akhakgwaebeom (äÅùÊÏùÛô, a manuscript of the principles for the study of musical sound published in 1593) Yeongsanhoesang was originated from a vocal music (Sangnyeongsan) of Buddhist chant that was set to the words of the seven letters, that is 'yeong-san-hoe-sang-bul-bo-sal (ÖÄߣüåßÓÝÖÜÌß±)'. Then it has been gradually developed into the greater suite as an instrumental music.

(from the Gayageum Jeongak written by Choi Chungung)

Instrumentation of the Yeongsanhoesang ensemble include the gayageum, geomungo, daegeum, sepiri, haegeum, yanggeum, danso and janggo. In this CD it was performed by the gayageum solo.
