The Park Jongseon Ryu (= school) Ajaeng Sanjo
The Sanjo Ajaeng
The ajaeng (7 or 8-stringed bowed long zither) for sanjo music is slightly reformed from its original traditional ajaeng which is associated with ensemble: the former is shorter than the latter, and a board is placed on top of the wooden body for resonance. Initially its bow made of the golden-bell tree was used, but recently it has been replaced to the bow made of horsehair. The volume of the sanjo ajaeng is loud, and it produces a sustained tone. As being sensitive and diverse in expression, it is widely used for accompanying changgeuk (sung drama derived from pansori) and dance performance as well as sanjo solo.
Ajaeng Sanjo
Ajaeng Sanjo emerged in around 1950 when it was established as much refined frames apart from the accompaniment of sinawi, highly improvised instrumental ensemble, and sung drama. Its contributor was Han Ilseop (1927-1973).
He passed his own sanjo melody on the ajaeng onto Park Jongseon (b. 1941), and it was named The Park Jongseon Ryu Ajaeng Sanjo. Park completed his own version by adding his melodies which its total performance time would last about thirty minutes compared with more or less ten minutes of the Han Ilseop's version. It features th melody framed the path of wujo (western equivalent to the sol mode) in Jinyangjo and the force that progresses in a magnificent fashion, although it is not diverse in the change of tonal organisation and cheong (pitches).
The ajaeng is often employed in the background music of films and dramas such as A Legend's Home due to its unique timbre. Its subtle sound is described as thick and feeble, or a heartaching high pitch and low one. This can create some aspects of ambience that we have experience in our lives, evoking the pick of our heart as if we watch very sad funeral ceremony on a rainy day. It also makes us tear by recalling our first love when listening in a lonesome autumn, and sometimes it sounds as if a ghost cries in the main floored room in a quiet night.
It is known that lives of most sanjo players become, in general, habituated to deeply the emotion of han (lit. means 'grudge', deep-seated emotions), so their performances sediment rather a full of sorrow. Nevertheless the Park Jongseon Ryu Ajaeng Sanjo shows rather the journey for life along with its sad tone colour. This results in that the more players perform it, the more difficult it is to express inside, although its melody seems simple so that it appears to be easy to learn first.

It forms the rhythmic cycles of Jinyangjo - Jungmori - Jungjungmori -Jajinmori and often is called 'Sorije Sanjo', meaning 'Sanjo that was much influenced by pansori (epic storytelling through song accompanied by a drum). The Park Jongseon Ryu Ajaeng Sanjo embraces the trait of pansori's seongeum (sound) more than other sanjo music, although all the sanjo music originated basically from pansori.

A congratulatory message
Sim Intaek (Prof. of Korean Music, Woosuk University)
Sending ... a delicate sound by keeping in the heart...
As looking back, it is remote
                As looking forward, I'm unaware...
As if a thread is untangled and untangled endlessly
Weaving it with a consistent mind from moment to moment
Could it be liked such a way?
As a matter of fact, could it be liked such a way?
                In this one album
That put this garak (melodies) having a mind all his life
Inform him of the heart that wishes to bury my soul.
Asking myself whether the ajaeng is Park Jiyong, or Park Jiyong is the ajaeng,
Each of her appearance is seen as a daydream
One string... another one... the bow that beats time to the sound of strings and the energy of the body that stretches out
Effort and passion that can feel and can't feel are filled with
So more and more
I get feel the magical power and fascination in the performance of Park Jiyong's sanjo
Performance is a trace of a dream. So we miss our dream.
On a cold winter day,
I was heard about the words that he wanted to inscribe its trace...
And after recording his performance at the early of March, the face showed his  likeness so much
It is the greatest happiness to be able to indulge into one's work that one likes
It is Park Jiyong
That his bodily movement along with its sound he performs by using all his strength is an impression itself.
It is this album that wish to be able to live, being kept the trace of the dream...
