BRIEF NOTE OF THE PERFORMER
Kim Mugyu (pen name: Baekyeong, 1908-1994)

Kim Mugyu was born in Gurye, Jeollanamdo (Southern area of Jeolla Province) in a wealthy family in 1908. He was not only a classical musician but respectable scholar. He was married to granddaughter of Maecheon Hwang Hyeon (1855-1910) who was a patriot and man of letters of the late Joseon Dynasty, in 1923. Influenced by the anti-Japanese sentiments of his wife's family, he organised the Association of Geumnan and developed the anti-Japanese activities under the Japanese occupation to Korea.
He studied at Myeongnun College (current Sungkyunkwan University) in 1934 and then returned back his home. While he was learning the danso (small notched bamboo vertical flute) with Jeon Yongseon (c.1890-1965), he completed his degree in Chinese Literature with correspondence course at Waseda University in Japan in 1937. When Korea became independent from Japan in 1945, he set up Gurye Middle School and became a headmaster. While devoted himself to education national ethos to the teens, he held his mind in politics and ran for the National Assembly several times. But he was unsuccessful.
He led the Association of Gurye District Prosperity by using all his strength to develop local communities. He wrote A History of Gurye District to implant a historical consciousness in the people. On the other hand, he was actively engaged in various activities for the identity of Gurye and traditional cultures, demonstrating his ideas at cultural centers and giving his special lectures at schools. His upright seonbi (classical scholar) spirit marked at Gurye Bongdeokjeong (traditional archery pavilion) when he had been a head of the archery club for 20 years as the 4th sadu (head of the archers).
In his later life, he left the musical scores that were performed by his teacher - Jeon Yongseon (also called 'Chusan' and a danso master), focusing on repertories that Kim Mugyu had learned in his childhood. In 1979 he performed the whole cycle of Yeongsanhoesang, representative classical suite music, at the presentation day of Jeon Chusan's disciples at Gonggansarang, Seoul and became wellknown. Kim was designated as the Arts Holder for the Guryehyangjejulpungryu on the Danso, Jungyomuhyeongmunajae (Important Intangible Cultural Property) no. 83-gaho, in 1985.
Kim Mugyu also had a profound knowledge of folk music - pansori (epic song by one singer accompanied by a drum player) and sanjo (solo instrumental music for stage), and he excelled in the geomungo (six-stringed plucking zither) playing which he studied with Kim Yundeok (pen name: Wudang, 1918-1978) at the Seoul Inheritance Center. He, above all, was an exponent on the music of danso, providing a balance between techniques and emotions as well as feelings of relaxation and simplicity.
 He died in August 1994 after having performed for its opening ceremony of the completion of the Instruction Building for Guryehyangjejulpungryu. He lived as a upright seonbi by practising Propriety and Arts and paved the way for safeguard of Guryehyangjejulpungryu.  
Guryehyangjejulpungryu
Guryehyangjejulpungryu refers to Julpungryu that is handed down around Gurye, Jeollanamdo. The original term of 'Julpungryu ('jul' = strings; 'pungryu ù¦×µ (= 'wind' and 'flow')'; music for enjoyment, or music for appreciation or reception) is Hyeonakyeongsanhoesang whose musical instrumentation is centred on the string instruments, especially on the geomungo. This concept contrasts with the term 'daepungryu ('dae' = large)' whose instrumentation is centred on the wood-wind instruments. The term 'hyangje' of 'Hyangjejulpungryu' denotes 'Julpungryu that is  handed down in the local area' which makes a contrast with Julpungryu that is transmitted in Seoul, particularly centred on Gungnipguakwon (The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts). There can, in general, be several versions in rendering Julpungryu, playing in Seoul as a urban style and other local styles. It is based on stock melodies that Jeon Yongseon, also called Juksin (lit. means, 'bamboo' and 'god') and a legendary pungryu master, formulated and then transmitted to Kim Mugyu in Gurye. This classical genre was designated as 'Hyangjejulpungryu' that was Jungyomuhyeongmunajae (Important Intangible Cultural Property) no. 83 along with Julpungryu of the Iri area, Jeollabukdo (Northern area of Jeolla Province), in 1985. After that Julpungryu that is transmitted in the Gurye area designated as Jungyomuhyeongmunajae no. 83-gaho separately from other local ones. Present its title was changed to Jungyomuhyeongmunajae  no. 83-1ho.
Guryehyangjejulpungryu consists of a geomungo, gayageum, yanggeum, sepiri, daegeum, haegeum, danso, janggo each of them. While the geomungo and gayageum play melodies firmly, wood-wind instruments produce a simple but vigorous tone with lightness separating the air throughout the whole cycle of the music.
Guryehyangjejulpungryu is a vast suite music, consisting of a total of 15 pieces. It is divided into three sections - Bonpungryu, Janpungryu and Dwitpungryu, and each section has several pieces: (1) Bonpungryu has 3 pieces: Joeum, Bonyeongsan and Jungnyeongsan; (2) Janpungryu has 8 pieces: Jannyeongsan, Garakjeji, Sanghyeondodeuri, Jandodeuri, Hahyeondodeuri, Yeombuldodeuri, Taryeong and Gunak; (3) Dwitpungryu has 4 pieces: Gyemyeongarakdodeuri, Yangcheongdodeuri, Wujogarakdodeuri, Gutgeori. 
Playing time of the whole pieces lasts about 70 minutes. It is performed by controlling variations and techniques while emphasising on the main notes. Unlike Gyeongjejulpungryu that is transmitted to Gungnipgugakwon, it includes Joeum (= 'tuning notes') that is Daseureum which is an introductory piece before starting to play Bonnyeongsan. For the very last piece, Pungryugutgeori, a very merry folk melody, is added to perform that its happy mood.
