BRIEF NOTES FOR THE PROGRAMME

Gwon Eun-yeong
Prof. of Korean Music Department,
Arts College of Busan University & Representative of the Busan Geomungo Music Society

1. Gangnamgog °³²°î
composer: * Kim Dae-seong
When I play this tune, I¡¯m getting indulged in feelings such as sorrow, despair, renunciation and beauty. A poet¡¯s lyric in which he would believe today¡®s despair rather than tomorrow¡¯s hope turns a weeping and trembles with the vibrations of the geomungo (6-string plucked zither with the suldae). Then there are calmness, peace and beauty left at the limit of its weeping .

Here is the comment from the composer:
¡°I composed this piece that was inspired by the poem ¡®Tangeum ÷¥ÐÖ¡¯¡® worked by Maechang (1573-1610, female poet), and identified it with the marks of the melodies of Wujogyemeonjo Sakdaeyeop-1 ¿ìÁ¶°è¸éÁ¶ »è´ë¿± 1 appeared in Hangeumsinbo ùÛÐÖãæÜÏ, musical notations for the geomungo compiled around the 18th century. It helped me compose this music with the imagination that Maechang may have played the tune from the manuscript on the geomungo after parting.¡±
This piece represents the pain of parting. The title ¡®Gangnamgog¡¯ was derived from the Maechang¡¯s poem - Tangeum, and the verse is as follows:
Who will take compassion on me even though I appeal the bottom of my heart with the geomungo

Million¡¯s grudges and thousand¡¯s anxieties are put in this single piece
While being played ¡®Gangnamgog¡¯ again, the spring comes to a close,
I would be reluctant to tear by exposed to the spring breeze.

* His composition -  ¡®Love Story¡¯ - was first performed on the geomungo in 2010 by Gwon Eun-yeong who requested him to do.

2. Cheongsan û»ê
composer: Hwang Eui-jong; arranger: Gwon Eun-yeong
Cheongsan was originally composed as the gayageum (12-string plucked zither) solo piece by the composer. Being mesmerised by its refined and clean melody in the first section, I had wished to render it on the geomungo. I arranged and played the whole sections of the music on the instrument in this CD. The performance focused on its delicate and easy flowing rather than dynamics, reviving the timbres with the maximum variety with regard to the instrument¡¯s graveness and the force and angle of the geomungo suldae (a thin stick for striking the geomungo strings).

3. * Mementomori ¸Þ¸àÅä¸ð¸®
composer: Baek Hyeon-ju
Mementomori (meaning, ¡®remember the fact that dies¡¯) is a theme of my geomungo recital that was set up in 2007, wishing rendering the variety of musical expressions in which ¡®death¡¯ became the current topic of conversations. I was particularly absorbed in the Mementomori composed by Baek Hyeon-ju, and I think it harmonises superbly with the piano and the geomungo which can be resulted in unnatural relating to the harmony. The composer comments:

¡°It consists of 5 parts that are compared the human¡¯s life with the 4 seasons. In each part, it represents musically the cycling theme (the spring - movement, the summer - beauty, the autumn - contemplation, the winter - pathos, and the spring - movement), and the timbre of the both instruments, geomungo and piano, are focused on the maximum variety.¡±

* This piece of music was first performed on the Geomungo ¡®Mementomori¡¯ in 2007 by Gwon Eun-yeong who requested her to do.

4. * Gyicheon ±Íõ
composer: Jeong Dong-hui
Gyicheon was first performed in my geomungo recital called ¡®Mementomori¡¯ in 2007. When the composer¡¯s comment on the repertory and the whole words of the poem ¡®Gyicheon¡¯, composed by Cheon Sang-byeong, were sent to me, I was concerned with detachment between the poem and the music for some time. As having understood the poet¡¯s life, I was able to play it by heart. Here is the whole verse of ¡®Gyicheon¡¯:
I would return to the heaven
The dawn glow comes and touches, then disappearing
Holding from hand to hand along with dew,

I would return to the heaven
Only two persons and with the sunset glow
Making a gesture to the clouds while playing at the valleys,

I would return to the heaven
The day that the picnic closes in this beautiful world,
Being there, I¡¯ll tell that the world was beautiful...
* This piece of music was first performed on the Geomungo ¡®Mementomori¡¯ in 2007 by Gwon Eun-yeong who requested him to do.

5. Aisori ¾ÆÀ̼Ҹ®
composer: Gang Bong-cheon
Traditional stock melodies can be valuable musical contents. Aisori (meaning, ¡®The Sound of Children¡¯) is the tune that is derived from Ggokdugaksi (meaning, ¡®puppet¡¯), traditional folk tune, as a theme and that has made much changes in the rhythm and melody. The geomungo that is possessed with a pedantic myth represents the world of the mischievous and innocent children with great fun.

6. Nae Gureumdoegeodeun Jane Baramdoege ³» ±¸¸§µÇ°Åµç ÀÚ³× ¹Ù¶÷µÇ°Ô
composer: Hwang Eui-jong
This is a vocal music whose lyric was put on the poem ¡®Nae Gureumdoegeodeun Jane Baramdoege¡¯ written by Kim Sang-hun, a poet and former president of the Busan Newspaper. It was originally arranged as ensemble music, but in this CD it was rearranged for the geomungo and vocal. It¡¯s rendition is to give a slight change to the geomungo¡¯s melody. While flowing slowly and leisurely, the inside of the lyric is well expressed. Thus it is refined in the harmony of the moderate and graceful melodies between the geomungo and namchang (male vocal) that flows lengthily in the traditional gagok (Korean classical song cycle with poem accompanied by ensemble) style. It seems to me that this piece offers both the performer and audience relaxation.
PROFILE OF THE PERFORMERS

Gwon Eun-yeong:
Prof. of Korean Music Department, Arts College of Busan University
& Representative of the Busan Geomungo Music Society
Professor Gwon studied Korean music specialised in the geomungo and obtained both B.A. and M.A. at Busan University. While being actively engaged in performing, she took the Ph.D programme at the Music and Culture Department, Donga University in order to understand the musical culture in totality. Her further studies gave her an opportunity to develope her ideas that she needed to involve today¡¯s music taking place in the various musical scenes, as traditional music takes a whole career. She has been working on the issues of the timbre in the geomungo performance, as it is regarded as the most important element. She is experiencing the principle of its power from the instrument, and also shares her view with her students.

Composers:
Hwang Ui-jong is Prof. of Korean Music, Arts College, Busan University
Kim Dae-seong is teaching Korean music at the both universities of Seoul National and Chungang.
