Gayageum Sanjo
Gayageum sanjo (»êÁ¶ ߤðà, literally ¡®scattered melodies¡¯) refers to a solo instrumental music which derived from sinawi (½Ã³ªÀ§, shamanistic music that is highly improvisational ensemble music performed in the southern areas of Korea) and the patterns of melodies and jangdans (Àå´Ü íþÓ, literally ¡°long and short¡± and refers to rhythmic cycles) of pansori (ÆǼҸ®, an epic song performed by one singer accompanied by a drum player). The genre of sanjo first was established by the master of the gayagum, Kim Chang-jo (1865-1920) as Gayageum Sanjo in the late nineteenth century. He formated it as three sections, starting with the slow tempo to the fast one, through the medium one (Jinyangjo - Jungmori - Jajinmori). Since then Gayageum sanjo had more than 8 ryupas ·ùÆÄ ×µ÷ï (schools/ versions/ styles that are transmitted to generations individually) that were interpreted by other gayageum masters throughout the time, and the Seong Geum-yeon Ryu Gayageum Sanjo in this CD is one of the well-known ryupas. In its processes, more sections have been added up to them to make its own sanjo music live in their melodic organisations and rapid in their rhythmic tempi. Its new formulation consisted, as it is today, of Jinyangjo - Jungmori - Jungjungmori - Eotmori - Jajinmori - Hwimori.
The characteristic features of the Gayageum sanjo are expressed in playing techniques of the right-hand movements to evoke emotion in an intensive manner. These are called ¡®yoseong ¿ä¼º èôᢡ¯ that makes a sound by shaking a string; ¡®tyeoseong Å𼺠÷Üᢡ¯ that makes a sound by gliding down from a high note to a lower one: ¡®chuseong Ãß¼º õÏᢡ® that makes a sound by pushing up a note. In particular, the technical treatment with micro-tones that are rendered by the nonghyeon (various kinds of hand movements, or vibrations) with the left-hand attains the highest perfection. Its fantastic melodies can truly be a representative solo artistic music in Korean folk music.

Today the Seong Geum-yeon Ryu Gayageum Sanjo was transmitted from Park Pal-gwe and then Park Sang-geun to Seong Geum-yeon. Its melodic progressions are diverse that are specified by two types of Gutgeori in the Jungnungmori section.
