1. The Choi Ok-san Ryu Gayagem Sanjo

The Choi Ok-san Ryu Gayagem Sanjo refers to another ryu (version/school/style) of the existing Gayageum Sanjos that was reconstructed by Choi Ok-san (also called Choi Ok-sam, 1902-1956).

Sanjo music, in general, has a number of characters: (i) leisurely nonghyeon (various vibrations and hand movements exerted on the string) in a slow jangdan (rhythmic cycles) and variable rhythms in a fast melody; (ii) a taste of the ¡®tension and release¡¯ principle that is intertwined with movements of notes which accompanies force; (iii) in addition, through repetitions of the ¡®tension and release¡¯, sanjo playing should be inspired by every aspect from the player that is imbedded in her/his own melody.

In this respect, sanjo music has its own school, and each one has different styles. Thus it can be an ¡®individual music that speaks for itself¡¯ of all genres that reveals the player¡¯s musicality.

The genre of sanjo is special to me because it makes me challenge all the time whenever I play. So it is my great tasks all my life to reach its highest level.

In performance the whole jangdans, Daseureum - Jinyang -Jungmori - Jungjungmori - Neujeunjajinmori - Jajinmori - Hwimori takes about 50 minutes, but in this version these are reduced to about 20 minutes. Performing sanjo is normally accompanied by the janggu (hour-glassed drum) that provides basic rhythms, but I have tried to play this sanjo with a buk (barrel drum) which conventionally accompanies pansori (narrative songs). I believe the buk produces much more a soft sound with solemnity rather than the janggu.

2. Ensemble version of the Gyeonggi folk song medley

Folk songs are one of the most popular genres in Korean traditional music. Its words contain a story of people¡¯s lives throughout time. Melodies in folk songs tend to repeat and have refrains, so people can easily memorise them.

Its melodic form is simple and economic. Due to the simplicity of its structure, folk songs allow singers to sing differently. For instance, s particular folk song can be rendered differently according to individual singers, the way of accompanying with instruments, a degree of audience¡¯s reception on the spot, and so on.

Due to the nature of such variables and interactions, I feel happy and lively with the whole atmosphere where singers, musicians and audience become oneness. In performance, its charm can be many: ¡®gilhyeongtae (¡®path¡¯ & ¡®shape¡¯) of various sounds that are endless; shifts of the rhythms are done freely.

This performance is an ensemble version of the folk song medley, and an instrumental arrangement consists of the daegeum, haegeum, gayageum, ajaeng and janggu without vocalists. This arrangement made me think over the way of forming the instruments in rendering folk songs, as all these musicians had only experiences of improvising by following the ¡®sorigil¡¯ (the way of producing sounds) after listening to the singers¡¯ words.

This raises some issues that how to form an ensemble version of folk songs that has no particular instruments to lead melodies of the songs adequately (normally the piri leads the main melody after a song, but in this performance it did not include due to its performance situation).

These can be solved as follows: I arranged within a basic frame and an individual instrument was to converse each other like a singing style; at each song (piece of a song) a solo part of the gayageum was inserted, while the rest of the instruments was rendering sigimsae or jangdan of Gyeonggi sori (¡®voice¡¯, or sound¡¯).

Its songs includes Bangataryeong - Geumgangsantaryeong - Noretgarak - Changbutaryeong, and its playing time lasts about 10 minutes.

3. Saegarak Byeolgog - composed by Seong Geum-yeon

Saegarak Byeolgog was composed by Seong Geum-yeon (1923-1986), one of the renowned gayageum players, in 1964, and it consists of Pusal - Teobeollim - Bongdeungchae - Ollimchae. In 1979 a new name called Dosalpuri was followed by Teobeollim. This music is still highly popular and a loved piece in its perfect and neat form as well as its lovely gayageum melody. It was regarded as then a highly innovated and new music out of such typical folk music genres of sanjo or sinawi, when it came out.

4. Jindo Ssitgimgut - Gilddaggeum0

A term ¡®ssitgim¡¯ denotes a gut practised in Jeolla provinces. It refers to a ritual for cheondo (the way of Heaven) that wishes an easy passage into eternity by cleaning impurity of the dead. Gilddaggeum in Jindo Ssitgimgut is performed for wishing the spirit of the dead to be able to enter the other world comfortably by cleaning the path towards the paradise. It is also performed for those who sent the dead to be relieved and comforted.

In the performance, I have arranged the section of Gilddaggeum into an instrumental ensemble without both songs and gut performers. Its performance order proceeds Heullim sinawi-Jinyangjo-Jungmori-Gutgeori-Sinawi-Seongjupuri. All the instruments employed play the role of the singers, and the gayageum takes part in megim garak (leading melody).

I was deeply moved by our ancestor¡¯s emotion which soothed one¡¯s mind and bestowing sympathy to the dead who had already gone to the other world, while I was preparing for this performance. This made me think about our own lives: today we tend to be concerned with only myself - ¡®I¡¯, otherwise other than ¡®I¡¯ would regard as simply ¡®the other¡¯ or ¡®others¡¯. We give priority to ¡®I¡¯. I realised how important to make and play music with others. I believe that all of us will receive comfort from the music that we make together. I wish all the audience who listen to our music peace and happiness.
