THE WELCOMING SPEECH
Seo Yong-seok (penname= Sorim)
associate-holder for DageumSanjo, Jungyomuhyeongmunaje no 45
Born in Hwasoon, the southern province of Jeolla, Na Yeong-seon learned Korean music and the piri formally in such institutions as Arts High School in Gwangju and Hanyang University in Seoul. He also gained the Ed. M at Joseon University. Since then he has been engaged in performing music at Gungnipguakwon (NCKTPA) Jeongakdan. Having made his great effort on developing his musical skills, he is now performing his 4th solo concert with the grand repertories for the piri. Beside his performance career, he teaches young musicians at Hanyang University.
My encounter with Na Yeong-seon as a teacher and a pupil went back to 1987 at my private institution situated in Nagwondong, Jongno, a centre of Seoul. My teaching method in instructing Piri Sanjo was based on whatever I sang sanjo melodies phrasing by phrasing with my mouth (called 'gueum ±¸À½Ï¢ëå'), he should play them on the piri. It was a very traditional way of learning music, especially in learning such improvisational features of the sanjo music. Though I used the gueum mostly as a teaching method, Na Yeong-seon understood its formation of melodic patterns, tones and timbres expressed in the sanjo music with the piri.
His musical skills were well displayed when he rendered two different genres - classical and folk on one concert programme. I was very impressed by his innate strength, and that development gave me a certainty of his mastery quality. Indicated by the title of 'Gangyunongdam', meaning 'harness, softness and a jest', he will deliver the authentic feeling of a jest in two repertories to the audience, crossing the quality of the hardness and softness. I hope that Korean music lovers, his friends and fellow musicians listen to his performance and give him a big clap.
I hope that the audience enjoy themselves with his performance.
Thank you very much.
With best wishes.

A SPEECH OF ENCOURAGEMENT
Hwang Gyu-nam (penname= Sodang)
Holder-Nominee for Gasa, Jungyomuhyeongmunaje no 41
I am very thrilled to attend and listen to the Na Yeong-seon's 4th piri solo performance in a beautiful and fruitful autumn. Na Yeong-seon is one of my excellent students, and I have a vivid memory of him: It was in 1983 when Na Yeong-seon asked me whether he could study the piri with me, and I was impressed by his sincerity and persistence on pursuing music. At that time he was a second-year student at Namdo Arts High School (currently Gwangju Arts High School), Gwangju, a southern part of Korea, and he was studying pansori ÆǼҸ® (epic story performed by one singer and a drum player) as a main subject. Since then he became my pupil and showed much application to his study: at that time I used to travel from Seoul to Gwangju by plane to teach the piri, and on every Friday I taught eight students at the School and then the next day for students at Jeonnam University. Whenever I went down to the School, those students waited for my arrival and gave me a warm welcome by pulling my arms. They were competing each other for receiving my lessons first. Throughout such an innocent and beautiful boyhood, Yeong-seon grew up with his music, and the music he plays  became part of his life.
He entered Hanyang University to study music and then gained the Ed. Master degree at Joseon University. He succeeded in getting a job as a piri player at Chungnam Gugak (Korean music) Orchestra, Cheonan-si and at Gwangju Sirip Gukgeukdan (National Theatre Company) as a leading player. Finally he became a member of Gungnipgugakwon, or The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts (NCKTPA), Jeongak Ensemble Group in Seoul which is regarded as the cradle of Korean traditional music, especially for jeongak (ïáäÅ, classical or court music). After indefatigable assiduity in his learning on the piri and virtuous conduct, he challenged to some competitions in Korean musical performance: he gained the Gold prize at Nangye Gugak Competitions, one of the wellknown contests on the area of Korean music, and then the Prime Minister prize at the Gwangju Gugak Grand Ceremony.
He also made his solo performances twice on the piri at Bitgoeul Jeonsugwan, Gwangju and for his third recital at Umyeondang, NCKTPA in December 2007. He chose to play the repertory of both traditional and newly composed music which would be rare to play in a single performance. His performance ability displayed a wide range of genres, including changjak eumak âÀÛÀ½¾ÇóÜíÂëåäÅ (new compositions based on traditional materials) as well as jeongak and folk music. He certainly is confident with rendering different styles of music. Beyond his performance proficiency, he challenges to perform GwanakYeongsanhoisang and the whole cycle (called 'jeonbatang' ) of the Seo Yong-seok Nyu Piri Sanjo together for his 4th recital. There is no doubt that Na Yeong-seon will demonstrate his best performance skills to the listeners and music lovers.
I am certain that attendants at his recital will be impressed by his performance, and the audience will give him courage and great reception. I do hope that his performance will grow to a mastery stage not only as the representative of Gwangju music but as that of NCKTPA with the piri playing.
Congratulations for his 4th performance.
Thank you very much.

The Seo Yong-seok Nyu Sanjo was recreated by Seo Yong-seok, a master piri player, on the piri with his gueum based upon sanjo music, highly artistic solo instrumental music. Seo Yong-seok (¼¿ë¼®(ßï×£à¸) 1940.2.~ ) is a versatile musician and composer who is also the master player on the daegeum and ajaeng. He is particularly good at making improvisational nature of melodies and has composed a number of works. Such repertories as instrumental ensemble, sin-baennore (new boat song), sanjo hapju (ensemble music for sanjo), including this mastery piri sanjo music are his own works.
The Seo Yong-seok Nyu Sanjo consists of jinyang-jungmori-jungjungmori-jajinmori jangdans which each section has its own characteristic mood. Jinyang and Jungmori proceed with alternating between wujo (major scale equivalent to a western scale; 'jo' = mode/ melodic type) and gyemyeonjo (minor scale); Jungjungmori starts with gyemyeonjo and shows the formation of the wujo-gyemyeonjo-gyeongdeureum (melodies of Gyeonggi folksong or shaman music)- gyemyeonjo; Jajinmori is comprised of gyemyeonjo and gyeongdeureum, then returns to gyemyeonjo at the ending.
This Piri Sanjo was built up with diversity of melodic organisations in each section. In particular, proceedings of gyeongdeureum featured in Jungjungmori and Jajinmori are remarkable, and this might be derived from Seo Yong-seok's understanding of namdo music (Jeolla provinces), and its congenial atmosphere appears to be his ability of constructing melodies. Its characteristic feature can be two techniques: (i) he facilitates the use of gyemyonjo melodic organisation that is a typical sanjo music of a namdo mode; (ii) he expresses maximum effects of the timbres in the melodies that the piri conveys and with a spontaneous jangdan combined with melodies. These two particular uses made it very popular among the sanjo repertoires. Na Yeong-seon studied the piri and its music with Seo Yong-seok and Han Se-hyeon, and he is an authentic line of The Seo Yong-seok Nyu Sanjo. He is truly an accomplished middle-aged player who is equally good at rendering both genres of classical and folk musics.

Gwanak Yeongsanhoisang is a suite music that was adapted from the original Yeongsanhoisang ¿µ»êȸ»óÖÄߣüåßÓ, one of the representative classical pieces of music, fitting to the music for woodwind instruments. Its instrumentation consists of 2 piris (bamboo oboe), 1 daegeum (largest transverse bamboo flute), 1 haegeum (two stringed spike fiddle), 1 buk (barrel drum) and 1 janggu (hour-glass drum) which is an fundamental set of ensemble for a traditional setting of 'samhyeonyukgak »ïÇöÀ°°¢ß²úá׿ÊÇ¡¯. This music is also called 'Samhyeon Yeongsanhoisang »ïÇö¿µ»êȸ»óß²úáÖÄߣüåßÓ, and its another names include 'Pyojeongmanbangjigog Ç¥Á¤¸¸¹æÁö°îøúïáØ¿Û°ñýÍØ' or 'Daepungnyu ´ëdz·ùÓÞù¦×µ'. Today it prefers to perform an extended instrumentation than the original repertory, and it consists of eight different pieces of music from a total of nine pieces with the omission of Hahyeondodeuri ÇÏÇöµµµå¸® as in Pyeongjohoisang ÆòÁ¶È¸»óøÁðàüåßÓ, another version of Yeongsanhoisang. Melodies of Gunak ±º¾ÇÏÚäÅ, its last piece in order, remained in tact, and its rests, except for Gunak, are usually played for accompaniment of court dances.
The first piece of Gwanak Yeongsanhoisang, Sangnyeongsan »ó·É»êß¾ÖÄߣ, would be the core among Korean classical music and the world renowned musical piece that was performed at the Opening Ceremony for the 24th Seoul Olympic Game in 1988. Gwanak Yeongsanhoisang is unconventional in performance: the beginning section is performed in a different manner out of its way to other court or classical musics or repertories. It is played a half-jangdan Àå´ÜíþÓ (rhythmic cycles) by the janggu and jwago (seated drum) rather than playing with melodic instruments. Then the piri, daegeum and haegeum are followed by those percussive instruments. This causes an extraordinary effect on the resultant sound. The contrast between the rigorous musical 'jeom Á¡ïÇ (point)' rendered by those drums and lines opens to a special aesthetic element in its sound. Rendition of yeoneum ¿¬À½Ö§ëå (slurring tones) that is interacting with the piri and the rest would be the trait in the performance.
The gusto of Gwanak Yeongsanhoisang would not find its way out of each piece of the original Yeongsanhoisang. Nevertheless its timbre or tone-colours of the former should be distinctive from that of the latter: the combination of timbres echoed from the woodwind instrument, and the percussive ones can be profound and sensational and even vulturous regarding a physical response. Occasionally such sound of sense and intuition can be found in the character of the Dionysus element. This can be a paradoxical aesthetics of music that is confirmed in the Buddhist music, especially songs for celebrating the Buddha.
The instrumentation in this CD consists of the daegeum, janggu and ajaeng (seven stringed zither with a bow) with the middle and lower register as well as the piri.
