A BRIEF NOTE FOR THE PROGRAMME
Yeongsanhoesang ¿µ»êȸ»óÖÄߣüåßÓ is one of the representative Korean classical ensemble music. It forms many different music consisting largely of eight or nine pieces of music played consecutively as one cycle. It had been played in banquets and ceremonies at court since Sejo, the king (reigned 1455-1468) in the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). It has also been transmitted and playing today as an essential repertory for pungnyu dz·ùù¦×µ (lit. means ¡®wind & flow¡¯; music for enjoyment, or music for appreciation or reception; gathering for music-making, singing, dancing reciting poems) which has been largely played in yulbang of the upper class. Thus yeongsanhoesang embodies the music of grace, nobility, profoundness, profundity and uprightness.
The extant yeongsanhoesang has been transmitted as three versions, and their names as follows: (i) ¡®Junggwanggog Áß±¤°îñìÎÃÍØ¡¯, also called Geomungohoesang; (ii) ¡®Pyojeongmanbanggog Ç¥Á¤¸¸¹æ°îøúïáØ¿Û°ÍØ¡¯, also called Saemyeonhoesang; and (iii) ¡®Yuchosingog À¯ÃʽŰî׳ôøãæÍØ¡¯, also called Pyeongjohoesang. The name of ¡®Junggwanggog¡¯ derives from the way of transposing the modes from imjongwu ÀÓÁ¾¿ì×ùñ¤éâ gyemyeonjo (equivalent to western minor scale or mode) to hwangjongchi ȲÁ¾Ä¡üÜñ¤Ä¡ pyeongjo (equivalent to western major scale or mode). It is played on largely string instruments (centred on the geomungo, six-stringed plucking zither), also commonly called ¡®Jul-pungnyu¡¯. The hyang-piri (oboe for Korean native piri) is employed instead of a se-piri (slender oboe), and the daegeum (large transverse bamboo flute) is played on much higher register. This creates a splendid, grand and placid sound.
Junggwanggog consists of eight pieces, and they are played in order - Sangryeongsan, Jungryeongsan, Seryeongsan, Garakdeori, Samhyeondodeuri, Yeombuldodeuri, Taryeong and Gunak. Hahyeondodeuri is excluded in this music, unlike in the form of Pyojeongmanbang. There are some characteristic features appeared in the whole piece of music: in producing tones the note of jungnyeo Áß·ÁñêÕå, in a case of Sangnyeongsan, has a tendency for being slightly lower, and the two tones of hwangjong and imjong often are expressed by nongeum Öçëå (oscillated notes).
Pyeongjohoesang is played on such woodwind instruments as the daegeum, piri (bamboo oboe), pyeongjo danso (small notched bamboo vertical flute), etc as a solo piece, and especially Sangnyeongsan is a popular piece of music. Yuchosingog is normally performed for the accompaniment of Chunaengjeon Ãá¾ÞÀüõðå£囀 (Dance of the Spring Nightingale) that is the court jeongjae ïÐî¦ (lit. means ¡®dedication to the monarch¡¯ or ¡®dedicate talent¡¯; it is an act of presenting artistry and talent to a high person.) dance. But Taryeong in Yuchosingog became well known as it is widely played as a favourite music. Pyeongjohoesang can occasionally be performed by string instruments, and this instrumental arrangement is called specially ¡®Chwitaepyeonggog ÃëÅÂÆò°î ö÷¼øÁÍØ¡¯.
