¡®Gogasinjo that embodies in my heart long¡¯


Gaak °¡¾ÇÊ°äÅ (Korean classical songs) has apparently been changed from Goryeo dynasty (982-1392) to Joseon one (1392-1910), as its origin proved in some manuscripts. It reflects the inner world of Korean people¡¯s lives. Unfortunately today the classical song shows its limitations on further developments after the publication of Gagogwolnyu °¡°î¿ø·ùÊ°ÍØê¹×µ (anthology of Korean classical songs published in 1876). This is caused by the fact that foreign cultures have constantly been introduced into Korea, particularly under the Japanese rule (1910-1945). Then western cultures have greatly been an effect on Korean cultures, not only in music but a way of Korean lives. This situation led gagog °¡°îÊ°ÍØ (long lyrical song) of gaak to be on the verge of dying in its practice and transmission.


Through such transitional period it was Kim Gi-soo (1917-1986, pen name is Jukheon) who recreated gagog based upon traditional materials of the text, sijo ½ÃÁ¶ãÁðà (classical poems). He composed a total of 155 new songs: 77 pieces of songs putting together in one work entitled in Gogasinjo in 1967 and 78 songs in its second volume in 1976. He then produced another 99 songs compiled in Nopeunhaneul (A High Sky). It seems to me that his aspiration and ardent affection on Korean classical songs led him to come into existence such a gem of songs. However, those fine songs had rare opportunities to be performed compared with other instrumental music. Sadly its existence has not even been known to most people.

For the purposes of preserving and promoting his songs, the Wolha Cultural Foundation (Cor.) decided to display his legacy to the public yearly, and the Institute for Korean JeongGa¡¤Ak (ïáÊ°äÅ, Korean classical songs and music) Research has been performing it regularly since 2006, and they performed three times. So this CD is the outcome of its third regular performance. The Foundation wishes to assist gaak-lovers and people to gain access to singing gaak easily. For its popularisation it is intending to work on the genre in a new way through the medium of education and broadcasting.


We hope that listeners and gaak-lovers enjoy this CD and give us encouragement.

The Kim Gi-soo¡¯s Anthology of Classical Songs

¡®Gogasinjo (Daemaru 77)¡¯


PREFACE


¡°Gogasinjo is a collection of the songs that was produced in a new and canonic manner. This song collection aimed to be used by learners who are studying in singing and vocal music. Its texts or lyrics consist of poems derived from gagog (classical song cycle with poem accompanied by ensemble) and sijo (a lyric song style accompanied by janggu/drum) which these classical songs used to be sung on the accompaniment of instruments and enjoyed by our ancestors. The titles of the songs I selected in this collection derived from some poems of relatively sound and esoteric contents from those classical poetry, and I composed their melodies to suit their contents. This aims to provide vocalists for widening and enhancing their choices of learning and training songs and for appreciating the original meanings of those song contents.¡±
