BRIEF NOTES FOR THE PROGRAMME

1. Chwita Pungnyu ̑٠dzᝠ(Chwita, Gilgunak, Giltaryeong, Yeombultaryeong, Samhyeontaryeong & Byeolgogtaryeong)

piri/ Yi Jong-dae & Yi Yong-tak, daegeum/ Yi Cheol-ju, haegeum/ Hong Ok-mi, ajaeng/ Kim Mu-gyeong, janggo/ Jang Deok-hwa, jwago/ Park Hwan-yeong

Chwita Pungnyu (chwita = the music of processional; pungnyu = ¡®music for enjoyment' or 'music for appreciation or reception') is a mingan pungnyu music, played among amateur musicians, paralleling to daepungnyu (a large scale of orchestra whose main instrument is a piri), practised in folk music. It proceeds with a steady tempo from Chwita to Giltaryeong and gets slow down in Yeombultaryeong. It is getting faster after the 1st jangdan of Samhyeontaryeong and then connects to Byeolgogtaryeong.

2. Ajaeng Sanjo (Han Il-seop je Park Dae-seong ryu) ¾ÆÀï »êÁ¶ (ÇÑÀϼ·Á¦ ¹Ú´ë¼º·ù)

ajaeng/ Park Dae-seong, janggo/ Park Hwan-yeong

Park Dae-seong is one of the disciples of Han Il-seop who was the 1st generation of transmitting Ajaeng Sanjo. It consists of jinyangjo, jungmori, jungjungmori and jajinmori that are the typical formation in the sanjo jangdan.

The ajaeng (7 stringed zither with a bow) is played with a bow, so that it is flexible in altering timbers and dynamics, producing a wide range of expressions - from a pathetic feeling to an intense tone. Particularly when it coordinates with the left hand movement called 'nonghyeon', it is capable of producing thick and wide vibrations. Park Dae-seong, an ajaeng master, is known to use the bow stick to the strings in a unique way, and particularly his playing of a 'gwigogseong (lit. means 'cry of ghost voice' in pansori performance)' section is regarded as his own special skill.

3. Sinawi Hapju ½Ã³ªÀ§ ÇÕÁÖ

piri/ Yi Jong-dae, daegeum/ Yi Cheol-ju, haegeum/ Hong Ok-mi, gayageum/ Paek Hye-sook, geomungo/ Gwon Eun-yeong, ajaeng/ Kim Mu-gyeong, jing/ Yi Yong-tak, janggo/ Jang Deok-hwa

Sinawi hapju was originally an ensemble for only the woodwind instrument (hyangpiri, daegeum, *haegeum, **ajaeng, jing, janggo), but other stringed instruments such as the geomungo, or gayageum are added in the group playing. It is the music that performers wish to display their improvisational skills or maximum techniques. In performance an individual instrument leads to a main melody, and such a heterophonic situation forms unique timbres produced from the group of instruments. As a result discrepancies (from a musically trained ear) that are created by the timbres of each player makes the sound even more natural and charming.

(* ** are treated as woodwind instruments in group playing, not string instruments in Korean traditional music.)

4. Piri Sanjo (Ji Yeong-hui je Park Beom-hun ryu) ÇǸ® »êÁ¶ (Áö¿µÈñÁ¦ ¹Ú¹üÈÆ·ù)

piri/ Yi Jong-dae, janggo/ Park Hwan-yeong

The Park Beom-hun Ryu Piri Sanjo was recreated by Park Beom-hun, a piri master, composer and conductor, from the sanjo frame of the Ji Yeong-hui Ryu Piri Sanjo. This music employs many transpositions in order to overcome the limited register of the piri. It is a sanjo music that brings a balance between elements of Namdo music and Gyeonggi sinawi stock melodies.

5. Taepyeongso & Samulnori ÅÂÆò¼Ò¿Í »ç¹°³îÀÌ

taepyeongso/ Yi Jong-dae, Samul accompaniment/ The Haullim Yesuldan (janggo/ Kim Dong-won, jing/ Kim Jeong-hui, ggwaenggwari/ Jo Jong-hun, buk & bara/ Hyeon Seung-hun)

Samulnori (= 'Four things', ggwaenggwari, jing, janggo and buk) includes occasionally a taepyeongso (conical oboe) that is used in pungmulnori (= 'things for entertaining people') in performance. In this CD, the taepyeongso is employed for Yi Jong-dae's music.
