Jongmyojeryeak refers to the music employed in jongmyojerye (rite and worship for king's ancestors) that used to perform for religious services and enshrine ancestral tablets of the former kings in the Joseon dynasty (1392-1905). Arrangement of the music is comprised of two kinds of suite music: (i) 11 pieces of Botaepyeong are designed to praise civil virtues of the royal ancestors; and (ii) 11 pieces of Jeongdaeeop are to celebrate military services. The music also accompanies ilmu ìëÙñ (dance with several rows at rites and worships) that is divided into two kinds of dances: munmu ÙþÙñ (Civil Dance) and mumu ÙëÙñ (Military Dance). Its performance setting is divided into two spaces: (i) deungga µî°¡ referring to orchestra which is performed music on the terrace of the Shrine; and (ii) heonga Çå°¡ referring to orchestra played in courtyard.
Its characteristic features are: (i) proceeding musical signals that informs of the beginning and the ending of the musical performance; (ii) having a song with a Chinese text called 'akjang äÅíñ' that praises civil virtues and military services. Jongmyo was registered as a world heritage by the UNESCO in December 1995, and Jongmyojeryeak as well as Jongmyojerye were designated as 'The World Master Piece Intangible Cultural Heritage' in the 18th May 2001. The performance in this CD is rendered in a small size of ensemble, excluding the procedure of the beginning and the ending, ilmu, and some instruments out of from the original full orchestration.

It constructs in pair with Boheoja ÜÆúÈí. This music comprises a total of 43 maru including Hwannip üµìý and Hwandu üµÔé, and the length of each maru is irregular. The content of its changsa (song text) gives a feeling of affection, whereas its music is solemn. The instrumentation in this CD consists of duet - the ajaeng and dang-piri, excluding other woodwind and percussion instruments.

composed by Yi Jeong-myeon
imjong-piri/ Na Young-sun

The winter seems rather a dull season compared with vitality and hope of the spring, a wind and noise from many sounds of the summer, and quietness of the autumn. It makes my mind just shrink in the elements of nature that appears to be ceased in time and coolness that is felt in the tip of my nose. However the sense that gives an extra beat and space to all the phenomena brings me easiness, as if it settles down the time. Although l like music that pursues musical limits to an instrument, as referred in this title, I have written the coolness of the winter down on the staff notation, dividing into three scenes. Throughout the sound of middle and lower registers of the imjong-piri and the echoes of the strings embraced by the 25 stringed gayageum, I am going to enjoy fully the scent of the winter that feels deeply in my little heart.
6. Memory of a Jeokbyeok îåÛúÀÇ Ãß¾ï
composed by Yang Seung-hwan
hyang-piri/ Na Young-sun
25 stringed gayageum/ Park Seol-hyeon
** hyang-piri = bamboo oboe for the native music
I have a vivid memory when Na Young-sun commissioned me to compose a piece of music about his longing jeokbyeok (red walls). I heard of his childhood from him in tear. According to Na Young-sun, a Noru tree situated in Hwasoon, the Southern Jeolla province, was placed after a famous Jeokbyeok in China, named by Choi San-doo (Sinjae) after seeing this superb view when he was sent into exile to Dongbuk. Since then numerous pungnyu (enjoying arts and music) poets and painters visited there and praised its beauty. I hope to memorize his childhood through this music It is composed as duet for the 25 stringed gayageum. It consists of two parts: the 1st part employs a number of variations in a jazz style; the 2nd one seeks to develop freely an improvisation of the piri melodies.
