"Gagaek of Seosan, the Southern Chungcheong province & the myeongin, Park In-gyu"
Seo Han-beom (Prof. Dr. of Danguk University)
Jeongga Á¤°¡ ïáÊ° (lit, means 'right music') is a Korean classical vocal music represented in gagog °¡°î Ê°ÍØ (song cycle with poem accompanied by ensemble), gasa °¡»ç Ê°Þò(narrative song accompanied by janggu/ small ensemble) and sijo ½ÃÁ¶ ãÁðà (lyric song style accompanied by janggu/drum). It is sung with a maximum moderation of one's feelings, and this vocal genre was the most favoured by the learned, or the seonbi (male literati) class during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1905). Because of its rigidity in a singing manner and slowness in tempo, it no longer draws attraction to the people today who are accustomed to the fast beats or speeds. Jeongga can be characterised by a number of aspects: the extensiveness of its form; the formal beauty that is refined and polished; the possession of the systematic beauty and admit of no alteration in rendering jangdan (rhythmic cycles) and improvisation; pursuing an ideal for the circular beauty that flows lengthy and the control of emotion; the beauty of solemnity that finds in intonation or pronunciation of saseol (text/ poem) and vocal technique; and the symmetric beauty of the woodwind and string instruments.
Despite this elegant vocal music, the future of jeongga would not be much optimistic in its survival: it is on the verge of discontinuing its transmission to the next generation, as there are only a few people who are willing to take up this genre of songs as profession and few listeners who appreciate and enjoy it. This situation will bring jeongga into discontinuation of its practice and preservation sooner or later. However Park In-gyu (real name is Seon-ung) is one of the gagaek (Ê°ËÔ, song master) who has been devoting himself to its preservation and transmission. His hometown, Seosan, the Southern Chungcheong province, was widely known as the place for jeongga, and most town people, especially the noble class, enjoyed singing the jeongga repertories, and Park In-gyu is one of the gagaek who inherited such classical songs and poems from his birth place.
Park In-gyu myeongin Ù£ìÑ (lit. means 'renowned person') brings his favourite sijo repertoire into life in this CD, and it includes a variety of sijo repertories such as Pyeongsijo, Jireumsijo and so on. Jeongga became a way of his life, and he  absorbed and mastered a wide range of repertories and styles of sijo and gagog including those of other regions. He obtained such repertories under studying with Jeong Gyeong-tae, Hong Won-gi and Kim Gyeong-bae who are the mainstream holders of the jeongga repertoire. He received great acclamations in his performance style and vocal technique regarding melodic lines, jangdan, sigimsae (ornamentation), yoseong (making a sound by shaking a throat) and other musical elements. He is the practitioner, but he also has a deep knowledge on jeongga and in general music.
He is currently actively engaged in a number of activities such as performing, teaching, transmitting, researching and broadcasting jeongga. In particular, as a jeongga instructor, he has won respect not only for his expertise but for his fine personality.
I hope that audiences and jeongga lovers enjoy listening to his performance in this CD and appreciate the essence of the sijo music he rendered. I also hope that this CD contributes to dispersing the beauty of jeongga and encourages listeners to feel at home.

RELEASING THE THIRD VOLUME OF SIJOCHANG (SONG OF SIJO)...
Park In-gyu (real name = Seon-ung)
Following the release of three albums of Sijochang (volumes 1 & 2) and Namchang Gagog (classical song cycle for male vocalist) volume 1, Sijojip 3 (sijochang volume 3) has just been released by the enormous support and encouragement of the Jeongga Society. It contains Sijobojip (¡®bo ÜÏ¡¯ = score/ musical notation; 'jip 󢡮 = volume) 11 pieces that are works of Jeong Gyeong-tae (pen name = Seokam) during the summer of 2008. I feel both released and regretful when I have achieved my wishes to complete it. Its recording session was very difficult for me due to the hot long summer. Because of such difficult circumstances, I tried to postpone working on my album, but supporters from especially national area made me push onto releasing this CD, and I must admit that I am not content with the outcome.
It passed almost forty years since I have started learning sijo. Initially I learned the Naepoje ('je 𤡮 = style/ version in classical vocal music) sijo that is based on the style of the Southern Chungcheong province, and then expanded its sijo styles and repertories to Soekamje, sichang, Gyeongje-sijo, gagog and gasa. I also expanded its genre to the newly composed vocal music based on jeongga. I feel studying arts is an endless process and always think that how nice we are if many people are able to sing jeongga. In particular, I would like to transmit the method of the scale cooperation within a human body that I have been experienced and mastered during my vocal training and to disperse the profound beauty of jeongga to the people.
