BRIEF NOTES OF THE PROGRAMMES
GAJEUNHOISANG °¡Áðȸ»ó
Gajeunhoisang, also called 'Gajinhoisang', refers to a large scale of classical music ensemble which is included 9 pieces of Hyeonak Yeongsanhoisang Çö¾Ç ¿µ»êȸ»ó (also 'Junggwangjigog Áß±¤Áö°î') and another 3 pieces of Cheonnyeonmanse õ³â¸¸¼¼ and a Dodeuri µµµå¸®, performing in sequence. This music consists of Sangnyeongsan, Jungnyeongsan, Seryeongsan, Garakdeori, Sanghyeondodeuri, Hahyeondodeuri, Yeombuldodeuri, Taryeong and Gunak in order that include in Yeongsanhoisang and then Dodeuri are added in the middle of the music. Other 3 pieces - Gyemyeongarakdodeuri, Yangcheongdodeuri and Wujogarakdodeuri from Cheonnyeonmanse are added in the end. Thus Gajeunhoisang can be interpreted as a greater 'Yeongsanhoisang' that contains all the pieces of three different repertories. Its instrumentation includes the gayageum (12 stringed plucking zither), haegeum (2 stringed spike fiddle), daegeum (largest transverse bamboo flute), piri (bamboo oboe), danso (small notched vertical bamboo flute), yanggeum (dulcimer), janggo (hour-glass drum) centred on the geomungo (6 stringed plucking zither with a stick).
While Gajeunhoisang is a large scale version of Yeongsanhoisang which includes a total 16 pieces of music, Yeongsanhoisang is a small scale of a suite music (a total 9 pieces) which was said to be developed from a vocal music.
Yeongsanhoisang çÏ-ߣ-üå-ßÓ was originally introduced as a vocal music with a Buddhist text that is 'yeong-san-hoi-sang-bul-bo-sal çÏ-ߣ-üå-ßÓ-ÝÖ-ÜÌ-ß±¡¯ appeared in Daeakhubo, an anthology of the 15th century musical repertoire. After Sangnyeongsan that is correspond to the current Yeongsanhoisang repertory became an instrumental music, it showed a sign of being a suite music by adding three variations - Jungnyeongsan, Seryeongsan and Garakdeori followed by Sangnyeongsan, its very 1st piece. Then it had a new piece of music - Sanghyeondodeuri and its variation Hahyeondodeuri that were not connected with the original Yeognsanhoisang at all. Later the Yeongsanhoisang added more pieces - Yeombuldodeuri, Taryeong and Gunak, and then a total 9 pieces of music were brought to completion of Yeongsanhoisang.
Musicians, who used to perform the nine pieces of Yeongsanhoisang, also devised a new method of making variations of Yeongsanhoisang in order to expand its performance duration. In the middle of the music, Dodeuri and its variations were inserted, so that the music could be played much longer. Furthermore after Gunak, Cheonnyeonmanse was added to perform. This process made the whole music to be perpetual that established a performance practice. Such a unusual way of performing Yeongsanhoisang was called 'Byeolgog º°°î' or 'Jeongsangjigog Á¤»óÁö°î' beside Yeongsanhoisang, and it is also named Gajeunhoisang that signifies 'Yeongsanhoisang' that is attached to some different pieces.
Gajeunhoisang takes almost 70 minutes in performance, and such long piece of music requires an extraordinary effort for the individual performers and great patience for the audience.
CHWITAEPYEONGJIGOG ÃëÅÂÆòÁö°î ö÷¼øÁñýÍØ
Chwitaepyeongjigog is another name of Pyeongjohoisang ÆòÁ¶È¸»ó. It derived from the music that was temporally named in Hyangdanggyoju úÁÓÐÎßñ´ (lit. means 'exchange between ensemble musics of native and Tang') which was performed at jinjak, a court banquet, in Jagyeongjeon in 1828 (the 28th year of the king Sunjo's reign). Its melody in the woodwind instrument is basically transposed by 4th lower than Hyeonak Yeonsanhoisang. Its mode is the same as Yuchosinjigog À¯ÃʽÅÁö°î, but the method of instrumentation is different. The instruments used in this music include a geomungo, gayageum, haegeum, janggo, sepiri, which is softer than the piri in volume, daegeum that is performed one octave lower than Pyeongjohoisang, and pyeongjo-danso ('pyeongjo' = major scale/ mode; 'danso' = small notched vertical bamboo flute) whose pitch is a perfect 4th lower than the gyemyeon-danso ('gyenyeonjo' = minor mode).
Chwitaepyeongjigog literally means 'to be completely drunken at a peaceful time'. This music was played when the subject raised a rice wine to their king during the court banquet which was held for female seniors of the royal household. It could be an enjoyable and fine moment to imagine the performance space and its musical sound that was gradually spreading with faint echoes behind beautiful walls patterned with 'sipjangsaeng ä¨íþßæ' (10 things that are supposed to live longer such as the sun, mountains, water, stone, clouds, pine trees, elixir of life, tortoise, crain and deer) at the back garden of Jagyoengjeon. This scene is as if a fine painting is spreading in sight. This leisurely and lengthy melody that sings abundance and peace will make the hot summer cooling down.
