Brief note for the programme

The Choi Ok-san Ryu Gayagem Sanjo

The Choi Ok-san Ryu Gayagem Sanjo is another version of the Gayageum Sanjo. It is reconstructed by Choi Ok-san (also called Choi Ok-sam, 1902-1956) adding his own rhythms and melodies based on the version of the Kim Chang-jo Gayageum Sanjo. Choi Ok-san learned the gayageum sanjo from Kim Chang-jo (1856-1919), a master gayageum player who first made a frame the sanjo melody on the gayageum (12 stringed plucking zither), and his became the first Gayageum Sanjo to be performed on stage. He taught his own version to Hamdong Jeongwol (1917-1994), master gayageum player, who introduced the music and made it popular in the mid-1970s.

There are number of characteristic features in the Choi Ok-san Ryu Gayagem Sanjo:

(i) The melodic organisation consists of more uses of wujo (wu mode that is equivalent to the western major scale) than other versions of the sanjo music, and in a case of gyemyeonjo (minor scale) it is divided clearly into pyeong-gyemyoen, byeon-gyemyeon, jin-gyemyeon, and so on.

(ii) The nonghyeon (various vibrations and hand movements exerted on the string) is generally rendered with simplicity and control, but it has the dramatic contrast where the way of urging the mood of agitation is expressed by the fierce movement of the nonghyeon.

(iii) It is known that the core of his version lies in organising jangdan (rhythmic pattern), tempo and timbre with distinction. For instance, the section of Jajinmori is put in a later order of the whole piece compared with that of other versions. This change of rhythm and tempo allows his music to make more varieties particularly in the melodic progression. This is exemplified in the part of ¡¡Sapungsewu (lit. means ¡¡a sandy wind and a drizzle¡¡)¡¡ in Jungjungmori, and also in the scene of touching the horse¡¡s hoof in Jajinmori that is also largely called ¡¡Gwonmaseong Garak (= melody)¡¡, an well known depiction of a horse¡¡s vigorous galloping on the gravelly field, in relation to its rhythmic structure. This section also expresses its timber in a unique way.

In general, sanjo music requires a number of playing techniques. Of these, the way of executing the nonghyeon gives an essential taste to the music where they are employed in contrast tempi: a player can display his/her nonghyeon skill regarding the temporal organisation in slower jangdans, whereas in faster jangdans, the player needs to alter the rhythms and timbre rapidly and constantly with his/her energy. Above all, the sanjo music is based on the repetition of the ¡¡tension & release¡¡, also called ¡¡joigo puneun mat¡¡, by the motions of the tones related to the player¡¡s body. Corresponding to this, the player needs a considerable energy to enable his/her body to change different speeds, rhythms and melodies. The player also needs to express the zeal according to the mood of each section facilitating his/her subtle bodily movements. Thus the player is frequently compared with a devoted monk, when the sanjo music being played, who is required a constant self-discipline and devotion to his religion,
