Welcoming the release of the 2nd album

"Gwon Jae-eun, the free-spirited soriggun (professional vocalist), whose devotion is to seek his own way of sori"

Yang Jeong-hwan

Director of the TOP Yesul Company

Korean Society for Old Phonology

The Seocho Gugak Forum

This second album performed by Gwon Jae-eun is followed by the first recording that was released 3 years ago. The main difference between these two CDs lies in the approach to recording that this recording was produced in his practising room where he settled in a mountainous area, near Chungju, situated in the middle part of Korea and where he mostly spends his time on practising. It was recorded by the one-point-stereo method that only two microphones were employed.

Recording work outside the music studio could be a problem, as the quality standard of the outcome would not be excellent regarding the cleanness of the sound. Furthermore it was not easy for Gwon Jae-eun who accompanied singing with his own janggu (hour-glass drum). Nevertheless we decided to adopt the alternative way in the hope that the audience would enjoy appreciating the humanly involved ¡¡sori (referring to ¡¡sound/ singing/ song)¡¡, as it would reveal the singer¡¡s usual way of the singing style and musicianship during practising sessions. We were encouraged by the audience¡¡s positive responses to Gwon¡¡s first album, and tried to retain the natural environment of the recording, though possible noisy effects could be added in it.

There has been an agreement among good listeners and performers, as far as we listen to Korean traditional vocal music today, that we hardly notice genuinely fine vocalists, since the first generation of the ¡¡myeongin myeongchang (Ù£ìÑÙ£óÝ lit. means ¡¡renowned person(s) and vocalist/singer(s)¡¡)¡¡, who were designated as a level of ¡¡Human Intangible Cultural Heritage¡¡ by the government, passed away. It is even increasingly difficult to find out vocalists who possess the ¡¡proper sori¡¡ embodying the beauty and the balance, although some have got the beauty in their sori. But again we get easily bored with their sori when being listened repeatedly, because they show, after all, the lack of their real talent and the loss of the constant passion in developing their arts, or they may be running out of their capability to render repertoire due to their priority to techniques as time passes. Performances of the genuine ¡¡myeongchang¡¡ would provide the listeners a variety of tastes whenever they render the same text or lyrics and also repeat the same melodies. Such an ability of making variations and interpretation of a song or song repertory is a basic skill and framework for traditional vocalists. When good vocalists display their own colours of diverse sound materials, listeners will be touched profoundly. This is the part of the roles that have meanings in their existence and is their contributions to revitalising traditional vocal music and its repertoire.

It is unmistakably recognisable that this kind of quality in performances is presented in the old recordings, or phonographs produced by the myeongchang in the past. Such musical tradition in the medium of recordings are greatly valuable as the intangible cultural heritage in relation to preservation and transmission. Comparing myeongchang of today to those of olden time presented in the recordings, the former is good as far as techniques concerned, but they are hardly shown in uniqueness of their own interpretations, and some are often accused their ¡¡sori¡¡ of having like ¡¡parrot styles¡¡ called the ¡¡photographic sound¡¡ that does not contain any taste at all.

Performance of Gwon Jae-eun, whose nick name is a ¡¡sangol soriggun¡¡ referring to "genuine professional vocalist", is embedded in his own style and colour in each sentence, phrasing, proper breathing throughout the song repertoire. Such taste is doubled when he accompanies himself with the janggu at his disposal. This quality will be paid great attention to the listeners.

The Soriggun - Gwon Jae-eun

Yim Yeon-gyu/ poet

2007. 4. 1. Listening to the raindrops at the Fool¡¡s Day

A person is born with a ¡¡sori¡¡

His own sori like a river

Flowing high ... and low...

Cicadas have sung loudly and gone out of the season

Cicadas laughed loudly every day

Whom did you try to learn sori?

Everyday life lives up with the melody of ¡¡sinawi¡¡

The night deepens and the moon raises

The moonlight is coming down,

As it becomes insensitive to my sori

Branches in the garden are trembling

They dance with my sori.

- The soriggun Gwon Jae-eun -

from Poem, professional

When a moon shone brightly in one day, I called upon his house. I had to come back home after having heard him practising in standing outside his cottage, as I felt that his effort was so intensive that he seemed to spit his blood. It was the night when I realised the true existence of the soriggun - Gwon Jae-eun: there was no need to explain what he was and what was his position in the world of vocal music today. Personally the night was a poetic moment when the bright moonlight raised on the Wolak mountain shone, and his sori from his cottage seemed to make the autumn fields waving. I never forgot that night that made me feel sorrowful.

Gwon Jae-eun¡¡s pen name is ¡¡Sangcheon »óõßÓô¹ (lit. means ¡¡an aspect and water¡¡)¡¡, which refers to the nature of water: water is modest like an endless horizon which follows the archaic principle of circulation that flows itself towards a lower place. This is the way in which water always flows, and so the word ¡¡sangcheon¡¡.

Here is the episode of how he became a soriggun. One day a boy was following the sunshine in the autumn light: during his primary school, he was attracted by the sound of the pallbearers¡¡ dirge and the jingling sound of the hand-ball by the seon-soriggun, while the funeral bier was processing in his neighbour village, and he stopped the school. He followed them along with the funeral bier through the autumn fields headed for the mountains. No one expected that the path could be a passage of another soriggun in this world. When the boy returned home from the somebody¡¡s funeral on that evening, it made him pay dear at the expense of a humble man he behaved on that day by his father. The incidence occurred 30 years ago made Gwon¡¡s life changed as a soriggun. For him being a soriggun, in his environment was not good: his place was almost a barren area for traditional music and songs, and consequently it was difficult to find out a good ¡¡sori¡¡ teacher and even more it was not easy for the boy to persuade his parents to allow him to take up sori lessons. However, he stood firmly for himself to be a singer.

His process of being a good vocalist reminds me of that of other great artists: in a case of Goethe, he started to plan for his novel - Faust at the age of 20 and was writing it over more than 60 years. The drama was not published in 2 months earlier until he died. His great work must have been progressed with his struggle and strength towards maturity throughout his life. I am wondering during the completion of Faust on the brisk of Goethe¡¡s death, whether or not, the writer was relieved by his indomitable effort and will that he wished to seek it from the devil - Mephistopheles whose nature was innate in his spirit. Otherwise did the writer find out the relief for himself throughout his life? In dealing with the matter of the evil in his life, Goethe must be immediate. Borrowing a word ¡¡nim ´Ôìó (refers to ¡¡love/ being loved¡¡, or the absolute being)¡¡ from the Manhae¡¡s well known poem (famous Korean poet and monk), physics is the nim for Newton; literature is the nim for Shakespeare; philosophy is the nim for Nietzsche; painting is for van Gogh, the nim for Gown Jae-eun becomes his own ¡¡sori¡¡ that flows profoundly throughout the incessant effort and self-struggle.

There is a metaphor of a ¡¡clean sorrow¡¡: there is a tear, and it is a ¡¡clean tear¡¡ which is understood by stars in the sky. It is also a ¡¡clean sorrow¡¡. Sori of Gwon Jae-eun would have not been the same quality for 30 years. The ¡¡clear han ÇÑùÏ (lit. means ¡¡grudge¡¡)¡¡ of Gwon Jae-eun, whose quality perhaps would be understood only by the sky, is going to prepare a big straw mat beside us. We tend to be concerned with our special person or friend as well as his/her matters. I was thrilled to find out such a good vocalist after listening to his sori during the event of the Wureuk Cultural Festival in Chungju. Since then we have been mutual friends in both places for singing and drinking for 25 years.

Gwon Jae-eun had moved to a few places such as Chuncheon, Wonju and Chungju in order to listen to different styles of songs and repertoire. He collected folk songs of each areas and socialised with local people. Finally he settled in the Buyong mountain area outskirts of Chungju and opened first ¡¡Sori Village¡¡ and has been engaged in singing and constantly training sori for himself. As all the artistic activities are involved in a continuous pain which can be a struggle with an innate ¡¡gut¡¡, maybe called a bridle of the artist, the way of being a soriggun should be achieved by the great force involved in the ¡¡lived¡¡ body. Regarding the birth of an artist Chunwon (famous writer) literally referred to this: it is the cry-out of the cuckoo who spits its blood in a deep night, and that becomes the sound of a spirit, Gwon Jae-eun is as usual commanding the mountains exerting his voice for hours at his cottage. He is fostering his voice and songs, as if leaves fondle and soothe themselves, and he does not even resent the mountains which slowly respond to the echo he threw. The source of all the matters tends to be rewarded according to the degree of efforts the subject did, and he himself becomes a ¡¡subject¡¡ and flows as the ¡¡way of sangcheon¡¡ does.

My dearest friend Sangcheon!

There is a word ¡¡noreumachi¡¡ which is a slang used in Namsadang (itinerant professional entertainment troupe). It denotes the genuine and best myeongin among the master musicians who finally has to finish the performance stage where he has started to perform, because it would be meaningless if somebody later appeared and performed in that performance stage. I am certain that your sori - ¡¡Gyeongseodo Sori (songs of the Gyeonggi and Pyeongan provinces)¡¡ is so unique that no other master singers can challenge to you. My dear, why don¡¡t you try to be the noreummachi?

I wish you live the way in which ¡¡cheongjeong¡¡ does and your sori is ¡¡being clean and clear¡¡, until you became a true soriggun beyond joy and enjoyment like a devoted monk!
