NOTES FOR THE PROGRAMME
1. Baennore ¹î³ë·¡ for the 25 stringed Gayageum Concerto (First Performance)
composer: Hwang Eui-jong, arranger: Gwak Jae-yeong
'Baennore' is a folk song originated from Gyeongsang provinces, and it consists of a gutgeori jangdan (rhythmic cycles) that gives an exciting mood. It was played as an instrumental version as a duet on the flute and the 25 stringed gayageum commissioned by the Gwangju Gayageum Ensemble for the 16th regular concert in 2004. This version is adapted as an ensemble performance for the 25 stringed gayageum.
The first movement starts with an introduction part that reminiscences wave-motions and then enters the gutgeori jangdan. It elevates the mood as if a conversation exchanges within the jangdan, then changes to the jajinmori jangdan. The end of this movement ends with four-beat metres with a light-hearted in a rapid tempo. The second movement starts with a jungmori jangdan on a solo gayageum in a slow tempo. It is developed into some variations within the danmori jangdan, and then returns to the original gutgeory jangdan.
2. The Arirang Variations ¾Æ¸®¶û, ¹Ð¾ç¾Æ¸®¶û - Arirang, Miryang-arirang
composer: Hwang Eui-jong
The folk song 'Arirang', one of the most popular and representative songs in Korea, has many regional repertories and variations, and one could understand its origin of each 'Arirang' from its names which are prefixed 'Arirang' with the particular regions, like Miryang-arirang from miryang area, Jindo-arirang from Jindo, Jeolla province. This piece of music is adapted to the variations of the stock melodies of Arirang and Miryang-arirang respectively whose jangdans are comprised of semachi to suit the duet performance of the 18 stringed and 25 stringed gayageums. It gives a different taste to the original melodies by adding a rich sound and a colourful harmony. It is executed by the expression of sentiment and simplicity regarding playing techniques of the 12 stringed gayageum.
The first movement presents the thematic melody of Arirang rendered by the 1st gayageum, and then is followed by a number of the variations. This section reaches its climax to the jangdans of eonmori and janjinmori which provide syncopated and driving rhythms. The second movement starts off the prelude featuring with the colourful broken chords. It is getting faster with varied sections and then finishes with the danmori jangdan shortly after the transposition followed by the semachi jangdan with a rapid tempo.
3. The Variations of the Theme of HanobaengnyeonÇÑ¿À¹é³â for the 25 stringed Gayageum (First Performance)
composer: Kim Seon
The characteristic of this folk song from Gangwon provinces possesses much the lamenting style or appealing one in mood, and it gives tasteful form rendered in sigimsae (the way of putting ornaments and vibrations) that expresses a profound feeling. Hanobaennyeon is a variation of the type of Arirang and embodies a typical sorrow feeling of this area.
This song is rendered on the accompaniment of the jungmori jangdan that is relatively slow in tempo and consists of a menari mode, or melody whose scale is built on three tones - mi, ra and do. Saseol (text) is constituted by a long type of phrasing which is carried by the refrain as such "... amuryeom geureochi geureotko malgo, hanobaengnyeon saljaneunde wen seonghwayo (means "... certainly... it [life] is so and so, of course, it is! Why bother with my asking that I want to live with you for a long time...)". This refrain give a feeling of very sadness and the title of the song - Hanobaengnyeon - derived from this refrain. In this CD it was arranged as trio that gives a rich feeling.
4. Jindo-arirang Áøµµ¾Æ¸®¶û for the 25 stringed Gayageum Duet (First Performance)
composer: Kim Mi-yeong
Jindo-arirang has been mostly well-known in the Jeolla province, and it is one of the most popular songs that anyone enables to sing its melody in that area. It is adapted to the gayageum melody expressing both a joyously atmosphere and a sad mood.
The first movement starts with a triplet metre as an introduction and then changes to the semachi jangdan. Within the jangdan it is developed into the conversational form that provides a full of fun. The second one also starts with a triplet metre and is executed in a bright mood, and the conversational style is following between the individual players. Its method gives a new atmosphere that highlights the music within the eonmori jangdan and then ends with its original melody in a slow tempo.
5. Katyusha Ä«Ãò»þ for the 25 stringed Gayageum Trio (First Performance)
composer: Kim Sam-gon
Katyusha is one of the most well known Russian folk songs, and the title refers to 'Russian villages' whose lyric starts with "Apple flowers and pear flowers are blossoming, Clouds are flowing down like streams..." This song was used to sing as a name of the military weapon as well as the military song during the World War II. As most Russian soldiers came from villages, its meaning contains "Let's guard our country remembering our Russia and our hometown - farming villages!" This tune had been used in an original track (OST) in the film - The Deer Hunter that Robert De Niro appeared in 1979. This CD is an adapted version of the trio.
6. Yieodosana À̾»ç³ª for the 25 stringed Gayageum Trio (First Performance)
composer: Choi Jae-ryun
This piece of music was originally composed for the 12 stringed gayageum ensemble commissioned by the Gwangju Gayageum Ensemble in 1993, and it was made to rearrangement for the ensemble version for the 25 stringed gayageum for the 16 regular performance in 2004.
It derives from a folk song from the Jeju island and consists of three parts that gives off a sea-salt smell as a whole. The first section followed by the prologue is called 'Odolddogi' that is the well-known tune in the region and comprises a gaily gutgeori jangdan; the second part in a tune of 'Yiyahong taryeong' develops into a free rhythm and a semachi jangdan; the third one, 'Yiyeodo sana' with the jajinmori jangdan is rendered with great fun. In the epilogue part, the main tunes of these three parts are played together toward the conclusion.
7. Sacheolga »çö°¡ (New folks song)
gayageum byeongchang: Ha Seon-yeong & Jeong Ja-gyeong, janggo: Pak Si-yang
Sacheolga depicts visually the four seasons of the beautiful landscapes of Korea, and in each season, its application to the adequate jangdans of jajinmori and eonmori are expressed with taste and pungnyu (literary means 'pung'=wind; 'nyu'=flowing, enjoying landscape and arts) and give excitement. It also well features a flying time and a transient life expressed in the melody of the gayageum.
The lyric of the music is as follows:
The spring has come, it has come in the landscape of the country
[refrain] Eheya dwiya... The spring has come
Eheya dwiya... The spring has come, let's greet it.
When some months flied and a season passed
The spring will come, and when the spring comes,
Let's go to mountains and to see flowers
Let's go and let us go, let's go to greet the spring
Azaleas in the front hills smile in bunches
Nightingales in the back hills sing beautifully
The new spring has come in the heart of women.
When months flied and the season passed
It is summer, and when it comes, let's go to fishing
Let's go and let us go, let's go to fishing
Bellflowers smile pretty
Butterflies also please to dance
As drizzle goes down, I dream a sweet dream
When months flied and the season passed
It is autumn, and when it comes,
let's go to see the glorious tints of its autumn foliage.
My dear friend with warm-hearted!
Let's go the majestic tints of the autumn mountains.
Rough waves and boundless, and gentle waves stretching over a ocean.
At night with a bright moon a piri sound of a shepard is tasty.
When months flied and the season passed
It will be winter, Ah... ah.... ah... oh...
In every bunch there is a white flower
Oh, pine and bamboo that are ruthless in a severe wind and snow forest!
As a snowflake is a silver colour, why you are green at all
Why are you green at all? [interlude]
Spring, summer, autumn and winter as four seasons
What a nice of our landscapes!
Spring, summer, autumn and winter as four seasons
What a nice of our landscapes!
Ah... ah... ah... oh...
