¡Ü BRIEF NOTES OF THE PROGRAMME
1. 'Danmori' for the 17-string gayageum trio
This piece of music consists of a total of five sections (A to E) and include a prelude. Its performing feature is to facilitate frequently techniques of the both hands that the 17-string gayageum allows. It also occasionally uses a conventional nonghyeon (various degrees of vibrate) in the part of altered gyemyeon mode (minor key that is equivalent to western music). The overall melodic organisation is based on a typical pentatonic scale (5-tone scale), and this makes a contrastive effect with a Nong'ak ("farmers' band music) rhythm after a passing episode.
2. 'Variations based on a theme of "Ganggangsullae" for the 12-string gayageum trio
A stream of human consciousness is rather free in the repetition of a simple melodic pattern. Reflecting upon, the starting point is always existing in that time-span as it is. In this respect a temporal organisation of Korean music is always connected to a curve from a curve. But as if languages of endless jangdans that are innate in its flowing draw upon a long story, jungjungmori jangdan and eonmori are integrated into one another and then resolve the flow of the overall music. Then at the end of the music a long echo is made with the nonghyeon, as notes are moving into a flexible rhythm of jungmori.
3. 'Yesterday & Yesterday Once More' for the 25-string gayageum quartet
This music is arranged to suit a 25-string gayageum quartet from the most popular tunes in the 1970s - Yesterday sung by the Beatles and Yesterday Once More sung by Carpenters. The main idea of putting these was to unify two different keys. The adaptation is made with keeping the original tunes: it is done the way in which the former as a gentle atmosphere, and the latter as much more splendid mood.
4. 'Ggonnore' for the 25-string gayageum quartet
It was a late winter that still a cold wind blew, when I was first time commissioned with this tune. At that time I imagined splendid flowers in natural colours, in the hope of longing for a warm spring time to come forward. The Ggonnore (literally means "song of the flower") is a modern folk song that I used to sing in my childhood. I have made an arrangement that consists of a single section for four 25-string gayageums. I also have made a melodic progression in a natural flow, so that everybody will be able to listen to it with ease and comfort. This tune features the blossoming process that after grown-up of a seed, it becomes a budding flower and then it develops into a flower by opening its leaves one by one miraculously.
5. The Kim Juk-pa Ryu Gayageum Sanjo
Kim Juk-pa Gayageum Sanjo was recreated by Kim Juk-pa (real name is Nan-cho, 1911-1989) by adding her own melodies on the basis of the two Gayageum Sanjo versions that were her grandfather - Kim Chang-jo (1865-1919) who was a master player and the pioneer of sanjo music and his disciple, Han Seong-gi (1899-1905) whom she learned and was transmitted to her. The formulation of its jangdans includes 6 sections that consist of Jinyang - Jungmori - Jungjungmori - Jajinmori - Hwimori - Sesanjosi. Its tonal organisation is based on various modes to change this sanjo music in its moods, and this includes wujo, pyeongjo, gyemyeonjo, gyeongdeureum, gansanje and so on. The characteristics of this sanjo lies in that the daejeom and sojeom are clearly indicated. It has both aspects of feminine that is shown in expressions of delicacy and splendor and of masculine that is displayed by power and vigour in its performance. It is performed in this CD as a trio encompassing the high, midd! le and low register of the gayageums.
