LIVE PERFORMANCE OF THE SENIOR MASTER MUSICIANS,
KIM JONG-HEUI & YI CHANG-GYU,
FOR THE 88TH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR BIRTHDAY
Gajeunhoisang and Gagog

This year the two senior master musicians, Kim Jong-huei (pen name is IlCho) and Yi Chang-gyu (pen name is DongEun), will greet the 88th anniversary of their birthday celebration. They have been performing music together throughout their lives. It is be very a rare opportunity to be released their performance together for the public as an album. Furthermore it is not quite common to witness such senior masters to gather and to perform music regularly and privately twice a month. They enjoy and share generously their musical repertoire and performing styles with younger musicians who seek to take part in a pungnyu (social gathering for performances in a private house) and to perform gagog (traditional classical song). After music sessions they also enjoy having meals together and talking about their past history with younger musicians. They are also able to relax and to have fun themselves with youngers.
Friendship between Yi Chang-gyu and Kim Jong-huei reflects a modern history of Korean traditional music and extraordinary: both were followed by the same path of rites of passage throughout their lives. The two master performers were born in 1918 in Jongnogu, Seoul, and they met at the primary school called Cheongun Public General School and became childhood friends. Then they entered YiwangjikAakbu (Royal Institution for Classical Music and the predecessor of the current Gungnipgugakwon, The National Center Korean Traditional Performing Arts) together as selected students for the 4th term in 1931 when Japan ruled Korea. Since then they continued to share their joys and sorrows with music and life for 80 years. They never ceased to play their musical performance, even though certain times such as under the Japanese rule and confused situations of Korea after the Civil War were made them difficult to engage in music-making. Nowadays they are the very history itself for Korean culture and traditional music. These musicians have made music part of their lives and fully enjoy themselves both as professional musicians and music lovers.
On the verge of greeting the autumn, IlCho used to tell us that we should meet more frequently every week to enjoy the pungnyu, and he was very anxious to make our meetings to be sure. We regularly gather at the Studio of Hansorigugakwon that is on the 4th floor in Sadangdong, Seoul and play music together. Recently IlCho seemed to be more difficult to walk up the steps than he used to be due to pains in his knees and frequent cough. Watching him walking the steps up and down while holding the rail of the floor with his hand, it reminds us that the time has passed very quickly, and this leads us to cherish and to value their music more and more. We had an idea that they deserve being celebrated for keeping their long tradition of music-making. This rare musical event, consequently releasing this album, was encouraged and joined by Jo Chang-hun, a master daegeum player and disciple of IlCho who was taught at the Training Institution for Korean Traditional Musicians, and Byeon Jin-shim, who released her CD accompanied by these two performers.
We hope music lovers and audiences will enjoy listening to this unusual performance and meeting these extraordinary musicians's personalities. We wish IlCho and DongEun a long and happy life!
BRIEF NOTES OF THE PROGRAMME

Gajeunhoisang °¡Áðȸ»ó
Gajeunhoisang is a pungnyu music (classical music played in private venues) classified as a classical Korean traditional music called 'jeongak (literally means 'right music')'. It is a master piece that is played within the longest duration among other versions of suite musics which are based on Yeongsanhoisang. [It is said that the music of Yeongsanhoisang was derived originally from a vocal music of the Buddhist words in around the 7th century, but the origin of its music remains obscure. It is believed that such short piece of music extended by adding some other music taken from other genres and developed throughout the time by numerous master musicians. Because of this historical process Yeongsanhoisang is comprised of more than seven sections whose individual one is either related to each other, or kept its character independently, and it is feasible to select any of the sections to play. Thus it has many different names according to (i) arrangements of instruments employed; (ii) on which a certain instrument is centred; (iii) the way of how many sections are interrelated. For instance, several names can be called: when a geomun'go (6 string plucking zither) leads the main melody, it is called 'Hyeonakyeongsanhoisang (Çö¾Ç, ¡°string instrument centered", ¿µ»êȸ»ó)¡¯; when a hyangpiri (native bamboo oboe) centres, it is called 'Gwanak- yeongsanhoisang (°ü¾Ç, "wind instrument centred")'; when Gwanakyeongsanhoisang is played on the 4th note below, it is called 'Pyeongjohoisang (ÆòÁ¶È¸»ó øÁðàüåßÓ)¡¯; when three other tunes such as "Minhoisang (¹Îȸ»ó)", "Cheonnyeonmanse (õ³â¸¸¼¼)" are added to the original pieces, from Sangnyeongsan to Gunak, this new arrangement is called Gajeunhoisang played on this CD.]
The characteristic feature of Gajeunhoisang that is played by these two masters in this CD is the way in which this piece is played in a different order, just mentioned above: the first piece of Yeongsanhoisang, Sangnyeongsan, is played after Gyemyeondaseureumgarak. This kind of performing method can be traced back to some old manuscripts and can be confirmed in the recording of the legendary master musician - Jeon Chu-san for its performance. They played in all elements of Yeongsanhoisang: after playing Hyeonakyeongsanhoisang that is said to be an original version of Yeongsanhoisang, the piece of Cheonnyeonmanse, starts from Gyemyeon-daseureumgarak, Dodeuri, Doljang and Gyemyeongarakdodeuri, is added to be finished. The performance of Gajeunhoisang signifies literally that "it has contained all the music", thus its playing time lasts more than one hour. This piece of music in this CD has a special meaning for these two master performers.
Biodata of the two master musicians
Kim Jong-huei (±èÁ¾Èñ ÑÑñ£ý÷, pen name: IlCho ÀÏÃÊ ìéõ®, 1918~ ) was born in Seoul on July, 1918. Yi Chang-gyu (ÀÌâ±Ô ì°óãÐ¥, pen name: DongEun µ¿Àº ÔÕëß, 1918~ ) was born in Seoul on December, 1918. He graduated from the YiwangjigAakbu Aaksaeng Yangseongso as the 4th term graduate. He specialised in the gayageum and yanggeum (dulcimer). He was taught by Ham Hwa-jin (pen name is Oryang) and Kim Yong-yun.
All the graduates of his contemporaries, whom all are now deceased, were distinguished figures who pioneered and greatly contributed to develop Korean music both in its performing world and music scholarship. For instance, Jang Sa-hun (UnCho) was a music scholar who taught music at Seoul National University and published a number of books on traditional music; Kim Gi-soo (JukHeon) was a former director of Gungnipgugakwon and president of the Gugak Middle and High Schools. He also provided the frame of the jeonggan musical notation; Kim Seong-jin (NokSeong) was a master daegeum player and became the Human Treasure for his performance; Kim Jun-hyeon was once called a 'unprecedented' master player on the piri.
After graduation, Yi Chang-gyu continued to play jeongak on the gayageum while working in public office and running his own business. He also taught music commissioned as a teaching director of Gungnipgugakwon. He is himself a witness of a history of Korean music: he provided a number of valuable and historic photo materials for the publication of the 40th anniversary of opening Gungnipgugakwon several years ago.
Both masters still performs music and transmit their musical genres to younger generation. This album is so valuable to us, and we are delighted to share their musial repertoire and styles with music lovers.
We wish IlCho and DongEun a long and happy life.
