The album of Chunhyangga performed by the late Park Bong-sul has just been released. I only can say that I am extremely happy and thrilled to be able to listen to this unique album, since Park led me to the artistic world of pansori that I have so far been engaging in its performance.
It was a long ago when I first listened to Park Bong-sul's songs from an old record of a 10 inch size produced by the Shinsegye Record Co. I was enchanted by his voice, and since then I had a great opportunity to study some repertories of pansori such as Jeokbyeokga, Heungboga and Sugungga with him. Under his guidance, it would not be exaggerated to say that I was able to transmit the lineage of dongpyeonje (pansori style and repertoire practised in the East side of Jeolla areas, southern part of Korea) that has been transmitted by the Song family throughout Park's versions.
Simultaneously I have always been felt something lacking of not having a chance to learn the repertory of his Chunhyangga version transmitted from the Song family's tradition with my teacher - Park Bong-sul. It is also a great pity that I failed learning that version of Chunhyangga, which is still remained throughout a number of performing situations, and spreading to the audience widely. Furthermore I became more disappointed with myself that I had no opportunity to release Park's own Chunhyangga performance as an album to the public, so that it would let his' own version know to the audience.
Luckily I was permitted to use the copyright of Park's whole cycle of Chunhyangga from Yi Bo-hyong, who did collect and record Park's whole performances and who made the recordings at his own expense in 2004. However, it took me a considerable time to revive and compile his old recording situations in order to make it 4 CDs. The problems of this work caused me two aspects: one is to seek financial aids and the other is to arrange saseols (text or lyric) of Chunhyangga from Park's version.
Through this difficult situation, a set of the Park Bong-sul's Chunhyangga came into existence. I owe my enormous debts to Yi Bo-hyong for his generous permission of his recordings. I also owe my debt to the authority of Suncheon-si for supporting this CD work financially.
I hope this album is just an initial step to show Park Bong-sul's Chunhyangga performance to a wide range of audience, and pansori performers and learners alike love and practise his song version widely. I also hope that the audience will love to listen to his album.

¡Ü A Brief note of the Park Bong-sul Je Chunhyangga album

Congratulations for releasing the unknown recording material of Chunhyangga performed by Park Bong-sul (1922-1989) as an album. This album was planned and supported financially by Suncheon-si situated in Jeollanamdo (southern area of Korea). It is not surprised to consider the special relationship between Park Bong-sul and Suncheon-si related to the release of the album.
Born in Gurye, Jeollanamdo, Park Bong-sul lived in Suncheon during his singing career and activities. Suncheon is a place where local people largely love and enjoy traditional songs, and they are also good listeners, so that unknown master singers at those time like Park Bong-sul are very much valued and acknowledged their musical talent by them. Suncheon is also an authentic place for a dongpyeonje (a singing style or version of Jeolla areas) pansori, and Park had a typical dongpyeonje sori (songs/ singing/ sounds), thus becoming his base for singing activity.
Park Bong-sul was born in hereditary pansori singers of the dongpyeonje pansori: his hometown is the place for that tradition and he learned naturally its style. His family possessed the style of dongpyeonje: his elderly brother, Bong-re, who taught Bong-sul, was a protege of Song Man-gab, a great master singer of dongpyeonje and one of the Great Five "Myeongchang (= master singers)" in the early 20th century. Song Man-gab was a pansori singer who rendered the most delicate and precise tones and the authentic lineage of the dongpyeonje sori whose practice derived from his own family's tradition: his grand-grand-father, Song Heung-rok was the first line of dongpyeonje and one of the Great Eight Myeongchang, his grand-father, Song Gwang-rok, was also great pansori singer, and was his father, Song Wu-ryong. Thus the dongpyeonje pansori lineage is as follows:
Song Heung-rok --> Song Gwang-rok --> Song Wu-ryong --> Song Man-gab --> Park Bong-re --> Park Bong-sul
Members of Park Bong-sul's family also transmitted its sorije as their own manner. His father, Park Man-jo, was a master singer of the dongpyeonje sori. As Park Bong-re passed away, his family devoted to Bong-sul's learning to singing as a forebear of the dongpyeonje style. Bong-sul came up to Seoul and learned songs from Song Man-gab at Joseonseongakyeonguhoi (Research for Korean Vocal Music) after he gained as a master singer at his hometown.
Park Bong-sul was good at the Five Great Repertoire of pansori - Chunhyangga, Heungboga, Shimcheongga, Sugungga and Jeokbeokga. Of these Bong-sul released three repertories - Jeokbeokga, Heungboga and Sugungga - for the albums to the public and gained a great acclaim. The album of Jeokbeokga that was designated the Important Intangible Cultural Asset no. 5 by the government was supported by the Cultural Property Bureau and the albums of Heungboga and Sugungga were supported by the Korea Britannica - Bburigipeunnamu. However Park Bong-sul died without releasing the album of the Dongpyeonje Chunhyangga to the public.
The story related to the current release of this album traces back to the early 1970s' situation, when Park Bong-sul came up to Seoul from Suncheon. At that time there had very few opportunities for Korean traditional musicians, including pansori performers, to perform in public, and even in Radio Broadcasting pansori was hardly aired to the listeners. Thus most pansori singers spent their time without performing. Park Bong-sul also had no opportunity to sing his repertoire, so he used to spare his time with Kim Myeong-hwan, a master drum player and lived in Seoul. At that time I was learning the drum from Kim Myeong-hwan, and one day Kim mentioned about a Park Bong-sul's Chunhyangga and highly praised his fine style (called 'badi'). I was also deeply impressed by his version of Chunhyangga. Then Park Bong-sul felt to deserve leaving his Chunhyangga version and suggested to me his wish to record of it before his death. That was the starting of his recording session of th! e rare version of Chunhyangga in private: he performed the whole version of Chunhyangga and Kim Myeong-hwan accompanied his drum. In return I paid him with monetary value.
Since then Park Bong-sul performed and recorded its part of Chunhyangga in a number of venues such as the Bburigipeunnamu Pansori Appreciation, Munyejinheungwon Pansori Documentation, and so on. But all his recording materials had never been opened to the public and even their sources were mostly unknown. Therefore my own recording material remained the only source for the Park Bong-sul's Dongpyeonje Chunhyangga. Since then I was very anxious to release his recordings as CDs to the public, but to obtain all the expenses for an album was problematic to me. Fortunately Suncheon-si sorted my problems out and helped this album out to be alive.
This album deserves attracting pansori lovers, performers and academics alike, as it is, above all, not only the first ever released as proper records, but the only material of the Dongpyeonje Chunhyangga. This album contains an essence of the dongpyeonje sori (sounds) that have been transmitted by the performing styles of the Song Man-gab je and Park Bong-sul je. In particular, such scenes of Gwanghallu (the location where Chunhyang and Master Yi first met), Sarangga (love song), Okjungga (singing a song in a jail by Chunhyang), and so on highlight the expressions of a profound and fine tone of dongpyeonje. These song repertories reach their climax of the splendidness of the dongpyeonje sori that gives moral support and spirit. ¡Ü The master singer - Park Bong-sul and Chunhyangga

It seems to me that the Park Bong-sul's version of Chunhyangga is a mixture of three different versions: its first part contains his own family's version (father, Park Man-jo, brothers Bong-re and Bong-chae) and his teacher - Song Man-gab; and its second part possesses a sorije of Jeong Jeong-ryeol. This assessment is the result of my research made by both interviews with such master pansori singers including Park Rok-ju, a great female pansori performer and comparison of the recordings of Chunhyangga performed by Park Bong-sul, Song Man-gab and Jeong Jeong-ryeol.
The Park Bong-sul je seems to have more influences on the version of his family than that of his teacher. This claim can be supported by its exports: Yi Bo-hyong, a musicologist and collector of the Park Bong-sul's Chunhyangga, told me that Park Rok-ju had listened to the deolleongje 'Gung'ja Song of the Park Bong-sul je Chunhyangga and commented that at that time Yu Gong-ryeol, another pansori singer, also sang like Park's version. Song Sun-seop, pansori singer and Park Bong-sul's disciple, informed me of the saseol of the Chunhyangga original manuscript (presumably 'Jangjabaekje') that Gang Chang-beom's grand father used to referred was similar to that of Park's Chunhyangga.
Some exports on Chunhyangga study, including Park Rok-ju, acknowledged that Park Bong-sul was the only master singer who was able to sing the whole five repertoire of pansori around the 1960s. Of these five repertoire of pansori, Chunhyangga is regarded as the core of pansori, so Park Bong-sul must have devoted his efforts specifically to this repertory.
His Chunhyangga performance shows a great tone and mastery skills in terms of seong'eum, buchimsae, jangdan, the way of elaboration, and so on, but such fine style of performance has not been continued in its transmission. Although he has recently died in 1989, his version of Chunhyangga did not transmitted to his students. The reason would lie in the fact that to his students his interpretation of Jeokbeokga was more wellknown than his other repertories, as the former was designated as the Important Intangible Cultural Asset. Because of his honourship, his Jeokbeokga was more paid attention than Chunhyangga to them.
In this situation I am very pleased that his Chunhyangga album has been released by the generous permission of Yi Bo-hyong who recorded it. Hopefully young singers would learn and transmit its version.
In addition beside Park's performance, it is worthy considering the Kim Myeong-hwan's performance with a drum and studying his mastery technique to the young musicians. This album reveals, above all, the essence of musicianship in performing Chunhyangga that is fantastically coordinated between two masters who died in the same year - 1989.
