¡Ü Chocolate - String Ensemble
2005, Autumn, The "Chocolate" is painting the streets.
There is sweetness in the pealing melodies of the Gayageum.
There is a slight bitter taste at the end of the touching sound of the Haegeum.
There is a soft hugging from the Ajaeng making grand sounds.
The "Chocolate" is the group consisting of young traditional string players.
Chocolate is the Korean string ensemble, pioneering the new field, which tries to show the power and the charm of the strings.
Our music will get your ears drunken like the chocolate loved by people because there's some bitter after its sweetness, softness after the bitter and something unknown at the end of the softness.

1. The Dance of the Puppets 06:14
composed by Choi Ji-hye
Gayageum1: Min So-yeon, Gayageum2: Kim Hye-won, Gayageum3: Kim Yu-sun
This work shows the puppets dancing over the candle light awkwardly and unnaturally. It makes various sounds which the Gayageum can make. For the 1st theme, it uses 7 scales, which is not like traditional Korean music and it has catchy melodies of the Korean fork song Minyo for the 2nd theme.
2. A Gayageum quartet ?abitus 09:16
composed by Byeon Gye-won
Gayageum1: Jang Won-hui, Gayageum2: Kim Hye-jin
Gayageum3: Kim Yu-sun, Gayageum4: Kim Hye-won
This work follows horizontal progress rather than vertical progress. In the first movement, the play goes by, repeating the musical units on and on. In the second movement, it plays a variation on the short tunes, based on ?ENARI TORI and adds modulation and irregular time, moving the music up towards climax. In addition to it, it shows a connection and unity to the first movement by repeating basic units. Although the Gayageum is not the instrument for repeating modulation, each of 4 players gives other players time to move a stop, which is possible because it is a quartet. In the 3rd movement, it tops off with the direct expression of condensed harmony. In conclusion, this work has repetitions and variations of melodies and rhythms to show there are always changes and a novelty in our routine life.
3. A duet for the Geums ? would be living in Cheong-san 09:28
composed by Piao Wei-zhe
Gayageum1: Kim Yu-sun, Kim Hye-jin, Gayageum2: Kim Hye-won, Jang Won-hui
Haegeum1: Bak Jin-a, Haegeum2: Kim Ji-eun, Ajaeng: Kim Sun-young, Kim Cham-da-woon
It introduces modern methods with the theme ?heong-san-byul-gok. The 1st movement expresses longing, regrets and the desire to escape from the reality while living in the mundane life. The 2nd movement shows the pleasure of scholars who are away from the mundane world.
4. A Haegeum duet ?heir Story 11:41
composed by Cho Won-hang
Haegeum1: Bak Jin-a, Haegeum2: Song Young-sun, Haegeum3: Kim Ji-eun, Janggu: Yeon Je-ho
The Haegeum conveys different sounds depending players as each person? voice is different. This work was made for 3 Haegeum players. It progresses as it tells each other? emotions and feelings and it is generous harmonious and sometimes has varied rhythms.
5. For 3 Gayageums ?he Autumn Sonnet 07:05
composed by Oh Eui-hye
Gayageum1: Tang Hwa-jung
Gayageum2: Min So-yeon
Gayageum3: Kim Hye-jin
This work is the one composed for 3 Gayageums with high, middle and low sound. It has 6 episodes The foot of the mountain where the wintry wind is blowing / The misty fading into the clear sunshine / A flock of birds flying out of the woods / The violet wild flowers blooming at graveyard / The grimy leaves / The cold wind urging winter. It takes advantage of the merits of the 25-stringed Gayageum, adding Sonnet to each part and making some changes with the varied rhythms and modulation.
6. By the theme of Arirang ?odeuri 08:36
composed by Oh Eui-hye
Gayageum1: Kim Hye-jin, Gayageum2: Kim Yu-sun, Gayageum3: Kim Hye-won, Jang Won-hui
Haegeum1: Kim Ji-eun, Haegeum2: Bak Jin-a
Ajaeng: Kim Sun-young, Kim Cham-da-woon
Janggu: Yeon Je-ho
The ?odeuri means repeating rhythm. It? the form which came from the Korean traditional music, ?o-heo-ja. This work was composed for string orchestra of Gayageum, Bapa, Haegeum, Ajaeng etc. It has Arirang as its theme, which is familiar to us and its rhythm changes whenever it is returning.
