¡Ü NOTES FOR THE REPERTORY
¡á BYEOLGOK
Byeolgog is played as part of Julpungnyu Yeongsanhoisang, one of the representative classical music genres, but is arranged in different variations. The Julpungnyu (or Hyeonak) Yeongsanhoisang, which is centred on stringed instruments for classic music ensemble, consists of a number of independent pieces as a suite form. It is usually comprised of nine pieces of music starting from playing Sangnyeongsan to Gunak. The term Byeolgog is a name of the pieces that indicates a number of varied versions by adding the name of 'dodeuri' that putting after each piece. There are four types of Byeolgog in performance, and its form in this CD consists of nine pieces of music starting with a dodeuri and at its 4th beat of the 7 jang (section) 15gak (time of a beat hit by the janggu) the tempo is gradually slower down. Its order of playing is as follows: Doljang, a small phrasing, is played until the Yeongsanhoisang, comprising a gyemyeonjo (minor mode), occurs. After playing with the! Sanghyeondodeuri 3jang 5gak, Hahyeondodeuri, that is an original Yeongsanhoisang, to Yeombuldodeuri, Taryeong and Gunak are played. Gyemyeongarakdodeuri, also called Cheonnyeonmanse, Yangcheongdodeuri and Wujogarakdodeuri are followed.
The total playing time takes usually about 35 minutes. In its performance, the gayageum (twelve stringed zither) and sepiri (slender bamboo oboe) are played together. The duet performance gives an authentic taste of jeong'ak (classical music) by balancing between a contrast space of emptiness and fullness of the gayageum sound and bridging the gap of the down-beat and up-beat with its melodic lines rendered by the sepiri.
¡á SANJO ENSEMBLE - Kim Byeong Ho ryu (First performance)
Sanjo is one of the virtuoso solo instrumental musics that is said to be framed as a master piece by such master musicians as Kim Changjo, Han Sukgu in the late 19th century. The Sanjo music is regarded as the essence of Korean traditional music that is integrated in a couple of features formed in other genres of master pieces: (i) it consists of the 'man-jung-sak' structure, meaning 'slow-moderate-fast' in tempo, that is characterised in the pungnyu music (classic instrumental ensemble) such as in Yeongsanhoisang; (ii) it has an improvisational element of sinawi melodies; (iii) it became a crystallisation of an elaborated musical formulation relating to modes and jangdans (rhythmic cycle) that appeared in pansori (epic song performed by one singer with drum accompaniment). Thus the sanjo embodies all the essential elements of Korean music, especially developed during the 19th century.
The form of sanjo was first framed on the gayageum (twelve stringed zither) and then adapted to individual instruments including the daegeum (transverse bamboo flute), geomun'go (six stringed plucking zither), haegeum (2 stringed spike fiddle), piri (bamboo oboe) and ajaeng (seven stringed bowed zither). Performing the sanjo displays a musical vehicle for expressing both individual and regional styles or versions that features its music-making as a 'diversity within a basic frame'. This shows many different genealogies of interpreting it called 'ryu' or 'je', meaning style or version, in each instrumental area.
The sanjo music embodies a diversity of human experiences. It is largely played as solo, but in this CD a number of instruments are joined in rendering another taste and atmosphere of the sanjo music. This Sanjo Ensemble was arranged by Yang Yeonseop, a master gayageum player, and it was at first performed in public.
The Kim Byeongho Ryu Gayageum Sanjo
Born in Yeongnam, Jeollanamdo, Kim Byeongho (1910-1968, pen name is Geumam) was tutored with Kim Changjo, the pioneer of the Gayageum Sanjo in the late 19th century, at the age of 10 or so. Kim was not only a master musician on the gayageum and ajaeng (seven stringed bowed zither) but a master vocalist in pansori (epic song performed by one singer with drum accompaniment) and Gagyageum byeongchang (singing a namdo music self accompanied with the gayageum). He performed and taught music throughout his life: in 1936 he was engaged in playing music as a member of the changgeuk (music drama) company at Joseon Seongak Yeonguhoi (the Study for Korean Vocal Music).
From 1961 to 1968 he taught younger musicians in Gungnipgugakwon, Gugaksa Yangseongso (Art School for Traditional Musicians) and Seoul National University.
