¡Ü NOTES FOR THE PROGRAMME
1. Baram and Gang ¹Ù¶÷¡¤° (¡°The Wind and the River)
The composer made the best of a timbre differently in this piece of music by deviating from a monodic trait, and then synchronising it with a harmony and jazz elements that have largely not been used in Korean music. This music is a work that is well synthesised with the melody and the rhythm, as if it sails with the wind, adding to the form of alternating between the themes and the melodies, and the rapid technique that the harmony is used.
2. Seseogui Jeonggyeong ¼¼¼®(á¬à´)ÀÇ Á¤°æ(ï×ÌØ)
(¡°The Pathetic Scene of the Elaborate Stone)
The Seseok Cheoljjuk (royal azalea) is regarded as one of the best ten sceneries of the Jiri Mountains. It tinges the scene with a light pink colour surrounding a huge of the Seseok Plateau across several million? acres in blossoming around at the end of May to the early of June annually. The royal azaleas that count a number of million? roots on the verge of the late Spring time do not take pride in their splendor. They are filled in a full of sight, and pheasants are making sounds in peace. This particular scene of the plateau looks romantic and pastoral. Kim Seok, the poet, sang the rose azalea of this area as follows:
The royal azaleas which fully blossomed in the Seseok glens,
The sound of cuckoos who are crying between the rose azaleas
Whenever a mild wind passes in between the flowers,
They look fantastic and their swaying looks splendid,
And this is a feast of a mature dream for maidens
who have beautiful eyes coming from the country of the South.
This consists of a total of six sections and portrays with different jangdans (rhythmic cycle) and different atmospheres of the scenery of the Seseok.
3~9. The Kim Byeong-ho Ryu Gayageum Sanjo
The Kim Byeong-ho Ryu Gayageum Sanjo is a master piece of music that truly has many aspects of its uniqueness in relation to its nonghyeon (various hand movements and vibrations), sigimsae (ornamentations) and jangdan. In nonghyeon, it is required to execute a deep amplitude of the 3rd and 4th intervals. The timbre of microtones leads its sound to a peculiar flavour that is achieved by the geopdaruchigi (double plucking) technique and the skillfulness of rendering yeouem (echoing effect).
In terms of jangdan, the duple beat division (like a hemiola) in jinyangjo (the slowest) and the triple beat division (called ?ngeogeori) in jungmori are framed in an unusual way, and eotmori whose jangdan is rare in its use of other sanjo musics gives Kim Byeong-ho ryu a unique status in terms of a device of varying the jangdan. Furthermore his version is made up with a typical pansori (epic song with one vocalist and a drum player) deoneum, and this feature demands players for a considerable period of training and efforts in order to express its taste of the music.
It? jangdan consists of a variety of rhythms and speeds in order from the slowest to the fastest: jinyangjo - jungmori - jungjungmori - eotmori - jajinmori - hwimori and danmori.
