¡Ü NOTES FOR THE PROGRAMME
1. Duggeoba Duggeoba µÎ²®¾Æ µÎ²®¾Æ (¡°A song of a toad)
This well known nursery song - Duggeobi - is a rendition of the musical elements (melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, etc.) combined with several themes, and this shows the composer? originality and adeptness linking to a comtemporary music. She above all displayed fully the condition confined to intervals or scales and ranges that the 25-stringed gayageum can be produced. She also attempted to make a balance of the traits between the Korean traditional music that the gayageum renders in itself and the contemporary western music that the composer is accustomed to. It is framed to vary six times after representing the main theme, and a single configuration at times is largely shown. In particular, in the fifth variation, it is expected to render the climax by a performer? ad lip.
2. Seomjip Agi ¼¶Áý¾Æ±â (¡°A baby in an island)
The Seomjip Agi is an expression of the emotion with its profound touch that is deeply embedded in the heart of many people through their lives, although it does not reveal its splendor. It evokes the sentiment of making wet the heart of the individuals who especially miss their parents or feel lonesomeness. The composer has delivered his spirit of the absolute longing for his mother and his childhood, as if it reflects like taking a look some old photographs.
3. Dalbit-goyo-punggyeong ´Þºû°í¿ädz°æ (¡°A still scenary under the moonlight)
This piece is a commissioned work performed by Kim Heui-jeong in 2001. It was designed for the ?oncert for a Talking Gayageum for Children composed for solo by O Eui-hye. Under the title that 2004 is the year of a ?isit to Korea, the composer made this song based upon two Japanese nursery songs called ?oons of 15 Nights and ? Moon of Hwangseong and applied the theme of the moon to her own work for Japanese children who were invited for the concert. It consists of newly composed melodies (?hangjakgog) followed by the slightly solemn introduction, and its variations that repeated and subdued an exciting eotmori jangdan (rhythmic cycle).
4. The Iksukan Garak Àͼ÷ÇÑ °¡¶ô (¡°Melodies that are familiar with)
The title of ?he Iksukan Garak refers to a material that a number of familiar melodies are used and arranged for this piece. It was selected from a various sound such as in Korean music, contemporary western music, etc., whatever the composer regarded them as being accustomed to her ear. This music is made to suit the sanjo gayageum, a gayageum for sanjo music, that is tuned as D Eb G A Bb, and is to display a careful interpretation and technique of the player.
5. Menari Hwansanggok ¸Þ³ª¸® ȯ»ó°î (¡°A fantasy for the menari theme)
Menari is a form of language that its mode embodies joys and sorrows of the life of the people rooted in the Jeongseon area, Gangwon Province. This piece is to make an image of an emotion of menari in a new way in addition to an improvised variational form with the gayageum. The addition of the string instruments supports the gayageum with their controlled sonic material. Concerning a musical material the original menari tori (means a ?ocal accent) and a ?opular principal melody that is newly extracted from this are varied and progressed invariably within a cycling form.
¡Ü PROFILE OF KIM HEUI-JEONG - GAYAGEUM
The weight that is occupied by a composer who portrays a creative world in a musical history is of significance. However at the same time unless the expectation and aspiration of performers who are concerning the new works made by such composers go along with, such a creative driving force towards their new compositions cannot be ever-lasting. In this sense, Kim Heui-jeong is one of the young performers who continuously rolls the wheels that can be resorted to a new dynamic. She is continuously challenging toward a new world of gayageum music, as if it recalls us to her artistic spirit as did the master sanjo players of the gayageum happened around one hundred years ago. It can be regarded Kim? characteristic of musical performance as to bridge the gaps between a constant endeavour of seriously studying traditional music and a realistic pursuit for contemporary works. She particularly has an excellent talent in presenting ¡°changjakeumak (newly composed music based upon ! traditional materials) intensively with a well and unique fashion. She has been playing the gayageum at the National Orchestra for Korean Music and is currently instructing music at Ehwa Women? University.
CAREER
She studied the gayageum at Ehwa Women? University and received the MA degree at Chung?ng University. She had her gayageum solo performances four times and joined in the National Orchestra for Korean Music. Her record release includes the CD that is a live performance in the Grand Festival for the 25-stringed ?mproved gayageum sponsored by the KBS FM; the CD for solo for the improved instrument - the gayageum. She also took part in numerous charity concerts such as for the Comfort Women; for Children and Adult under the title of ? Talking Gayageum and the gayageum that the external terrestrial knows sponsored by Munyejinheungwon for supporting young artists. Beside these performances, she participated in under the variety of subtitles cooperated with other arts: A Stage for ?he Improved Instruments at Gungnipgugakwon entitled as ?rt gallery is playground as the artist takes part in the audience at the Artseonjae Centre; a solo playing at the variety of Shinakhoi Changjak! Eumak and the first performance of other many changjak eumak.
Her representative concert repertories are the Sonamu (a pine tree) Concerto for a Koto, composed by Mikiminoru - the first performance with the gayageum; Variations for the Brier Rose, composed by Kim Hoi-gyeong; ?oyuwa for String Quartet and the 25-stringed gayageum, composed by Ryu Geon-ju.
