¡Ü Notes on the Music
1. Ongheya for the Gayageum Quartet (2002) Composer; Lim Jun-hui
Ongheya is a folk song that was popularly sung when Koreans cheered the national soccer team during the World Cup Soccer Games in June 2002. This song is originally sung for the threshing barleys; hence is also called Song of Threshing Barleys. It is in the form of call-and-response in a fast rhythm. This composition is written for four gayageum. It preserves the unique form and melodic line of the original song but presents diverse rhythmic variations. The 18-stringed gayageum express wide tonal range and contrasting timbre. The composer hopes to encourage the people with this joyful music.
2. Arari Cubic I (2004) Composer; Won Il
This composition tries to express various abstract images of Arirang in the manner of the destruction of the original song. The destruction is not merely a variation but to focus on the sensitive musical sound. The familiar melody of Arirang has different images depending on the listeners. The harmonic perception does not follow the typical pattern as the light transit through a prism. The rhythm also changes in accordance with the melodic change. In other words, the light (Arirang) will make a new musical sound produced by the prism (gayageum) through the resounding of air to our auditory sense. To articulate the simple melodic material, the composer renovates the gayageum technique and sounding concept.
3. Gayageum Ensemble on the Theme of Boat Song (2002) Composer; Han Jin
The sea ... The wave that brings the memory of the dim past, The fluttering sound of sea gulls, The fall of passionate life over the horizon.
The composer expresses the admiration and imagination of the sea that have been in the mind from his childhood on the melody of a folk song, Boat Song, with the gayageum.
4. Ilseung wolhang for the Zither (2000) Composer; Ji Won-seok
This composition, commissioned by Gyeonggi Gayageum Ensemble, is a variation on the theme of Song of Road. It is written for the solo gayageum, the yanggeum (dulcimer), and two 18-stringed gayageum. The melodic changes and dynamic progression in harmony with the rhythmic change express the dissolution processes of traditional and contemporary elements. The resonating sound of strings, which tries to exhibit the structured regularity in re-interpretation and simplification on the theme of Song of Road, resembles a Korean painting which emphasizes the beauty of emptiness.
5. Gayageum Ensemble on the Theme of Song of Neunsil (2002) Composer; Kong Woo-yeong
This composition was written on the theme of Song of Neunsil which describes several animals such as the cock, dog, phoenix, cuckoo, and so forth. It is performed by the ensemble of the 25-stringed gayageum. It is not regulated by the conventional pentatonic scale but uses the heptatonic scale to put to practical use of the renovated instrument which can freely articulate the chromatic and enharmonic progressions and the disperse harmony. This musical piece begins with a slow-tempo variation and processes to a medium-tempo theme of original song. Its tempo gets faster in accordance with the main theme and the rhythmic variation. In the last part, the piece goes back to a slow-tempo as performed in the beginning part. History of Gyeonggi Gayageum Ensemble
