¡á The world of Kwak Soo-eun? Gayageum
Born in Seoul, Kwak Soo-eun began studying Gayageum with her aunt Lee Hyo-bun at a very early age and later entered Korean Traditional Music High School. Her studies continued at Seoul National University in both Undergraduate and Graduate School in which she pursued performance as well as music theory to enhance her overall musicianship. Upon graduation, she began teaching at the Traditional Music High School and Chugye University and was awarded in the famed Dong-a Contest for her Gayageum performance.
Beginning with her graduate recital in 1996, Kwak performed her first solo recital in which many genres of traditional music, including new compositions, Sanjo, and classical style were featured. In the same year, she performed 'The Sea'(21 string) for KBS FM Radio on Gukak-Hanmadang(the stage for korean music) and 'Spring Snow'(17 string) on Culture Salon. For her second solo recital, Kwak performed the entire Kim Juk-pa school's Sanjo for the National Intangible Cultural Asset Concert in 1998. Having studied both with Kim Juk-pa and one of her prized disciples and university professor Lee Jae-suk, Kwak was artistically recognized for her impeccable interpretation of the difficult Sanjo in its entirety.
In 2000, in her third solo recital, Kwak displayed foresight and her love for the young genre of new Korean traditional music. She performed 5 newly composed pieces along with the classics. She had encompassed all the different music styles and made it her own. Her skills in classical performance style, as well as both delicate and strong vibrato touches, and her overall understanding of the instrument and well crafted musicianship, Kwak will be the leader in next generation players of the Gayageum.
¡á Explanation of program
The Sea (21 strings)
Sea, where my love is. And the place where my heart is at peace. Being born away from the sea, I may look only a foot tall. But I who have seen the sea, am as tall as the tallest tree.
Was I affected by the sea's scent, or dyed by its colors?

SANJO (The Sanjo of Kim Juk Pa School)
¡á Gayageum, invented in the 6th century during the Gaya Kingdom, is a long 12-stringed zither. The body is made of paulownia wood and 12 movable bridges support its silk strings. The player plucks the strings with the right hand and uses the left hand to depress the strings creating a myriad of ornamental effect.
The origin of Sanjo, Korea's main solo instrumental form, which developed during the 19 century, lies in Shamanistic music of southwestern Korea. Although initially of an improvisatory nature, sanjo today is performed as relatively set pieces.
The 8 schools of Gayageum sanjo bear the name of their originators. Solo sanjo is also performed on other Korean instruments, but Gayageum sanjo is the oldest and most widely performed.
The names of the sections in sanjo designate tempi and rhythmic patterns and are played without a break at gradually increasing tempos. Each section has its own rhythmic cycle called jangdan, which is maintained on the janggo (hourglass drum). Chinyangjo is a 24 beat cycle with a triple sub-division of each beat: it can be considered as 4 sections of 6 dotted crotchet beats at a slow tempo. Jungmori has 12 crotchet beats at a moderate tempo. Jungjungmori, is in a quicker 12/8; Jajinmori is in fast 12/8, Hwimori with the same beat, is even faster, Danmori (Sesanjosi), is a fast 4/4. The beginning of each new section is indicated by the soloist playing a short phrase emphasizing the new rhythm pattern.
This recording is based on the complete sanjo of Kim Juk Pa school. It has six movements, beginning with the slow Jinyangjo and finishing with the fast Sesanjosi, the equivalent of Danmori. The sanjo of this school is known for its delicate and feminine tone.
Originally it takes between 53 and 55 minutes to play full sanjo, but its length can be shortened to 10 or 30 minutes by players.
¡á Daseureum : Prelude
Jinyangjo : very slow, sextuple meter (18/8)
Jungmori : moderate, twelve-best pattern (12/4)
Jungjungmori : swaying, compound four-beat pattern (12/8)
Jajinmori : fast compound meter (12/8)
Hwimori : very fast compound meter (12/8)
