¡á Jeong Soonyun:
The Marvelous Performer
Expressing Her Heartbreaking Feelings on Every Single Tone
The artist Jeong Soonyun once said in an interview, "I think that it is very important how sincerely the artist is able to express her/his own feeling in a performance. Any music in no sincerity cannot move the audience as well as musicians themselves." This is her own view of performance from the bottom of her heart.
Since her childhood, Jeong Soonyun has dreamed of being a great artist who can deeply touch the audience with her performance. Her lifetime motto is the words: 'Right Mind creates Right Music'(ïáãýïáëå), which the late Master Jeong Kwonjin once taught her. This motto tells us that how significant it is to her the music spontaneously overflowing from her deep heart. We can easily imagine her music world by understanding her own philosophy of Korean music: 'The philosophy of Korean music lies in its power of the ongoing unification of the performer and the audience in one common ground. The power makes it possible for us to be true human beings in the last instance. It also stimulates us to absorb ourselves in the attractive spiritual sounds and it leads us to make every efforts to master them.'
¡á Youngsanwhoesang(Hahyun-Gunak)
Youngsanwhoesang, the representative classic piece for entertainment, is the chamber music of which the mood is very calm and tender. The musical instruments used in the performance consist of Sehpiri, Daegum, Danso, Haegum, Komungo, Kayagum, Yangum, and Janggo. Only one of each participates in the performance and the string takes the lead. Thst's why it is called 'Geomungo Whoesang' or 'Joongkwangjigok'. It is composed of total 9 parts among which this performance covers from the sixth part to the ninth: Hahyundodri, Yumbooldodri, Taryung, and Gunak.
¡á Kaemyunggok(ٰͮÍØ)
Kaemyunggok is the second piece of Kim Youngjae? works of art which mimicked the sound of animals, composed in 1995. The piece impressively reproduces some kind of spiritual and mysterious sound-moves of chickens. The highlight of this performance might be the marvelous bowing technique of the performer that invokes a sort of mesmeric sound of shamanism. The performer has tried to mimic a variety of animal sounds with the Haegum. The mimicry of chicken is originally arranged in 6 parts, which represent dawn, morning, noon, afternoon, evening, and night in order to describe the everyday life of chicken.
¡á Haegum Sanjo in Kim Youngjae Style
The colorful movements of tone and rhythm are characteristic of Haegum Sanjo in Kim Youngjae Style. In terms of tone, this piece moves from Woojo through Pyungjo to Kaemyunjo. Besides, it delivers unique variations of Kyungdrum, Hoguljae and Maenari. Especially, during the performance the finger movements frequently take place by the changes of sound formation. Also Danmori is one of the most distinctive bowing techniques in the Haegum performance.
Kim Youngjae has been taught Haegum by Jee Younghee. He also makes himself master of Komungo. He has composed a variety of creative pieces.
