¡á Sugung-ga
The music is one of the five pieces of pansori. It is also called tobyeol-ga, tokki-taryeong or pyeoljubu-taryeong. This story is believed to have stemmed from a tale about a tortoise and a hare, in which the tortoise lures and takes the hare to the underwater palace for the dragon king suffering from an ailment that can be cured only with hare's liver, but the hare succeeds in returning to the forest alive using his wisdom. It sarcastically describes the human society with the animals and gives the lessons of wisdom for living. Poseong-sori
The singing style of Poseong area or Poseong-sori was formed by Cheong Eung-min(pan name: songkye). Cheong learned Simcheong-ga, Sugung-ga and Cheokpyeok-ga of the style of Park Yu-jeon through his disciple, Cheong Jae-keun, and Chunhyang-ga of the style of Kim Se-jong through Kim Chan-eop and recreated the musics on the basis of his musicality and philosophy of music. Now Poseong-sori includes Simcheong-ga, Sugung-ga, Cheokpyeok-ga and Kim Se-jong's style Chunhyang-ga which he transmitted to his disciples at his birth place, Poseong. It is characteristics of the harmony of the delicate and strong sound which comes from the intensification of the sad and feminine sound by the masculine one.
¡á Cheong Hoe-seok
Cheong Hoe-seok was born in 1963 in Poseong, Cheollanamdo Province. The great singers of pansori have been born in his family throughout four generations. His father was a master singer, Chong Kwon-jin, who was designated a human cultural treasure for his sugung-ga by the government in 1970.
Cheong Hoe-seok did a variety of musical study. In the Korean Traditional Music Middle and High School, he majored in cheong-ga(aristocratic songs). Then in Seoul National University, he studied taegeum(large transverse bamboo flute). And he got an M.A. in music at the graduate school of Chungang University with a thesis on cheokbyeok-ga focused to Chong Kwon-jin's singing.
He has received various awards. He won the first prize at pansori Contest when he was a teenager. In his early 20s, he was awarded the prize for pansori at Donga Concours in Korean Traditional Music and the first prize for singing at the National Contest of Korean Traditional Music.
He has held a variety of pansori performance; Sugung-ga Concert at the 3rd Generation Pansori Stage Poseong-sori(1992), the 1st Cheong Hoe-seok Pansori Recital(1992), Simchong-ga Concert in Commemoration of Woldang Chong Kwon-jin(1993), Stage Woldang Posong-sori(1993), the Full-length Sugung-ga Presentation at the Regular Performance of the Important Intangible Cultural Asset(1995), Simchong-ga Concert in Commemoration of the Opening of Ye-ak Dang of the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts(1998), Cheong Hoe-seok Chunhyang-ga Concert(1998), etc. He was also active in teaching and performing pansori abroad.
His tanga, ¡®kangsangpungwol¡¯ and pansori, ¡®sarang-ga¡¯(love song) from chunhyang-ga can be found in a series of CD of Korean traditional music, ¡®saenghwal-kukak-taejonjip.¡¯
Being an Initiator of the Important Intangible Cultural Asset, No. 5, pansori, he presently serves for the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts as a member of folk music group.
