The former institute of the Korean Traditional Music Middle and High School, Kukaksa-yangseongso, opened in April of 1955. Every year, 30 boys who had graduated from elementary school were picked for their musical talent. They studied 3 years for the middle school course and the same period for high school, in total 6 years. They were given their text books, stationary supplies, clothings and allowances of 300 won as a scholarship by the government.
Kim Chung-seop and Choi Chung-ung were selected to the first graduating class of the school, Kim majoring in Taegeum and Choi in Kayageum. After graduating with good grades, they were appointed as performers with the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts. They have held several posts such as the head of performers, supervisor, and director, which was taken first by Choi and is now held by Kim.
Both of the two musicians have taught in many reputable universities. They have also participated in almost the same number of domestic and international performances. Choi Chung-ung is a candidate for Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 1, Chongmyocheryeak, and Kim Chung-seop for No. 39, Cheoyongmu.
But, more than anything else, they should be proud of who their teachers were. Choi Chung-ung studied Kayageum under Seongjae Kim Yeong-yun who was a part of the third graduating class of the music school affiliated with the royal conservatory. Kim Chung-seop studied Taegeum under Nokseong Kim Seong-jin who was a part of the fourth graduating class of the school.
I believe that there are no masters of Kayageum and Taegeum who rival these two musicians. Now that Kim Yeong-yun and Kim Seong-jin have passed away, it is these two men who will carry on their musical tradition. Their decision to prepare a night of Pungryu together and show their artistry is welcome news added by great expectation.
In the first part, they will be playing Todeuri in a duet of Kayageum and Taegeum, followed by Cheongseonggok in Tanso solo by Kim Chung-seop. A special performance of Cheong Jae-kuk, a member of the second graduating class of the Kukaksa-yangsongso will lead to the second part, where Kim Chung-seop and Choi Chung-ung will play together the entire piece of Pyeongjoheosang.
Pyeongjoheosang and Todeuri in a duet of wind (Taegeum or Tanso) and string (Kayageum) instruments are some of the most beautiful melodies of Korean traditional music. And Cheongseonggok in Tanso solo by Kim Chung-seop stands unchallenged. It is believed that the night of two masters will garner interest among avid listeners and be remembered as a highlight of this year? concerts.

¡á Todeuri
This court music is a variation of the Koreanized piece of Poheoja, a Chinese music piece brought into Korea during the Koryo Dynasty. There are two kinds of Todeuri, meaning a repeat: Mit(low)-todeuri and Ut(high Todeuri). Originally there was Todeuri only. This music was played an octave higher and called Ut-todeuri, while the original Todeuri has been referred as Mit-todeuri. Mit-todeuri has another classical name of Suyeonjangjigok and Ut-todeuri Songguyeojigok. Here, Mit-todeuri and Ut-todeuri is played in a duet, the former by Taegeum and the latter by Kayageum.
¡á Cheongseonggok
This solo number is a variation of the melody of wind instruments to accompany Ujo-tugeo, a piece of lyric song cycle, Kagok. Because of the high and clear sound, it is called cheongseonggok, literally meaning a piece in high tone. It is usually played in solo for Taegeum, a large transverse bamboo flute or Tanso, a notched bamboo flute. Here, it is played by Tanso with a clear timbre and subtle melodies conveying the feeling of tranquility.
¡á Chajinhannip
Taken from the original Kagok, the classical lyric song, this piece is performed without lyrics and with wind instruments only. Here it is played in Piri(oboe) solo.
¡á Pyeongjoheosang
Pyeongjoheosang, or Yuchoshinjigok is one of the three versions of the instrumental suite, Yeongsanheosang which once had Buddhist lyrics. They were played in string and wind ensemble at the royal court banquets and other similar occasions. Pyeongjoheosang is composed of 8 movements which begin very slowly and gradually quicken in tempo; Sangyeongsan, Chungryeongsan, Seryeongsan, Karakdeori, Samhyeun Todeuri, Yeumbul Todeuri, Taryeong, and Kunak.
