Great Master Singer LEE Byeongseong
LEE Byeongseong(ì°Ü¹àø, 1910-1960), one of the best pupils of HA Gyuil(ùÁФìé, 1867-1937) was born in 21 January, 1910 as the first son of LEE Sugyeong(ì°áøÌÏ, 1882-1955), a music director of Jangagweon(íæäÅêÂ), a Royal Music Institute. His ancestral home is Gyeongju and pen name is Dubong(ÔàÜç). After finishing his secondary education in 1922, he entered the Training center of Yiwangjikaakbu(ì°èÝòÅäºäÅÝ») as its latter term of the 2nd period in 19222) and took a piri(pipe) as his major and a yanggeum(dulcimer) as his minor. He graduated the institute in March 1926 and worked Yiwangjikaakbu as senior musician and prime senior musician, and by 1939. In 1950 he was appointed as adviser of Guwanggungaakbu(ÏÁèÝÏàäºäÅÝ»), the former predecessor of the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts and also since 1952 with the foundation of the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts, he was appointed as director of Arts.
He met his mentor HA Gyuil when Mr. HA was teaching combined students of the already graduated students of the first and the second periods in 1926. He found that LEE Byeongseong had distinct musical talent and took him his best pupil. With his mentor's support, LEE Byeongseong bridged gagok(Ê°ÍØ) and gasa(Ê°Þò), two forms of Korean traditional music to the present.
His musical talent seems to be genealogical transmission. His father, LEE Sugyeong, a master player of geomungo(six-stringed zither), was of Jangagweon, Royal Musical Institute in King Gojong's reign, his grandfather, LEE Weongeun(ì°ê¹ÐÆ, ?~?) was music subdirector in King Gojong's reign, and his great grand father, LEE Insik(ì°ìÙãÕ, ?~?), a master piri player, was music director in the Late Joseon period. What is more LEE Byeongwu(ì°Ü¹éÞ, 1908~1971), Yiwangjikaakbu graduate musician (piri player) is his cousin and his first son, LEE Donggyu, ex-director of the court music troupe of the NCKTPA is also mater musician and his forth son, LEE Jeonggyu also showed his natural talent in Korean traditional music.
In these CDs, we have twenty one pieces of music in total: twelve pieces of gagok, two pieces of gasa, and seven pieces of sijo. The majority of them are housed in the reference library of the NCKTPA. The pieces of gagok and gasa sung by LEE Byeongseong were trained by HA Gyuil and sijo(ãÁðà), particularly saseoljireumsijo(ÞöàããÁðà) was from YM Gijun(ì÷ÐññÕ, 1868~1940). After HA Gyuil passed away, YM Gijun succeeded in teaching gasa, particularly, the unknown four pieces(Suyangsanga, Yangyangga, Cheosaga, and Maehwaga) at Yiwangjikaakbu for only four month in 1939.
Introduction of Korean Vocal Music: Gagok, Gasa, Sijo
Gagok is a representative vocal genre appreciated by the scholars of the Joseon period. It uses sijo, traditional Korean poetry with fixed forms, for its texts. Performed since around the sixteenth century, in the early Joseon period, gagok has been passed on until today, undergoing many changes and generating variations. In gagok, the three-verse form sijo is re-divided into five sections, and a daeyeoeum(prelude) and an jungyeoeum(interlude) are added. Gagok is always accompanied by a chamber ensemble comprised of wind and string instruments. Gagok has two kinds of modes, the 'gyemyeon mode'(gyemyeonjo) and the 'u mode'(ujo). Also, there are twenty-six pieces for men, and fifteen for women. A feature of gagok is that any sijo text, depending on its content and poetic rhythm, can be sung to any of the gagok melodies. In a performance, gagok pieces traditionally were sung alternatively between man and woman, except for the last piece Taepyeongga, which was sung togethe! r. Today, however, only one or a few pieces are sung at a performance.
Gasa uses long narrative poetry as its text and was developed by the appreciators of sijo. Although its musical style is not as refined as that of gagok, it requires professional vocal utterance, and advanced musical technique. Each gasa piece has a fixed text whereas sijo and gagok pieces have various texts that can be used spontaneously. Presently, twelve gasa pieces are transmitted.
Sijo is a traditional vocal music genre in which the performer sings the indigenous fixed-form poetry of Korea called sijo. The titles of the sijo pieces usually derive from the first phrase of the texts, and the musical and textual forms of a sijo piece are the same. Sijo comprises three sections-chojang(beginning section), jungjang(middle section), jongjang(ending section)-and there are restrictions as to the form and the number of words that can be used. Even though a particular sijo melody can employ diverse sijo poems for its text, today only a limited number of sijo poems are used.

CD1 - Gagok
1. Ujo Chosudaeyeop "Dongchangi"
East window becomes bright(The sun goes up.).
Skylarks are singing(People outside are working hard.).
Doesn't the boy driving cows wake up?
How long does he expect to finish making furrows of such a long field over the hill?
By describing a peaceful agrarian atmosphere, it encourages farmers to work hard and administrators to make rightful decisions for their people. Also to modern folks it has a message to be faithful to their duties,
This song was favoured by LEE Byeongseong in his life time. This comes the first among other gagok songs and it is played not by 'daeyeoeum', a kind of prelude, but by 'daseureum', rhythmless music. This song is designed to be sung in a quiet tone with slow tempo as if describing a peaceful scene of a rural area.
2. Ujo Samsudaeyeop ¡°Dohwaihwa¡±
Peach blossoms, plum blossoms, apricot blossoms, and other beautiful plants!
Do not lament such a short Spring time of the year.
You will be everlasting along with the sun and the earth.
But we lament our short lives for a hundred years at most.
My dear flowers! Do not lament that every flower blooms for only ten days!
You will appear again future Springs for ever,
but our life has a destiny to die. Thus this poem tells nothingness of the life.
Unlike ¡¸Chosudaeyeop¡¹, ¡¸Samsudeayeop¡¹ starts from high tone in more speedy tempo.
3. Ujo Soyongi ¡°Bulani¡±
I would have nothing to feel envious of if I have a magic pot making meal which does not need firing; a healthy horse which does not need any food; a concubine who is good at making clothes; a magic kettle which liquor is gushing out; and finally a black cow which delivers calf from its stomach.
We can find common wished of the ancient people as well as modern people.
Ordinary people in both times seem to wish abundant and stable in their daily lives rather than achieving social success. Moreover, the horse in this song can be compared with a car movable without any fuel. How amazing it is!
Also a concubine who makes my clothes and sometimes makes me enjoyable, is also ideal.
It is like having a ever-benefit making business in a modern interpretation: a liquor kettle which liquer is gushing out endlessly, a cow delivering calves by herself.
If so, there is nothing I am envious of!
Balancing with these ideas, Soyongi is sung in high tunes with expressing valiant and vigorous manners.
4. Ujo Urong ¡°Samweolsamil¡±
We have white plum bolssoms and red peach blossoms in the late Spring
and we have yellow chrysanthemums and tinted leaves all over the mountains in the late Autumn!
There are liquor pots in local pubs and the moon of Autumn is reflected in the Lake of Dongjeong!
Let's drink Bamboo wine in a white-jade cup!
Some beginner might think the title is difficult to read since it consists of Chinese characters but it has key words in predicting meaning of the contents, its style and length. In the case of ¡¸Urong¡¹ it shows features of humorous songs in ujo mode.
5. Ujo Urak ¡°Jodaga¡±
While fishing under the warm sunlight, I lost my fishing rod.
and while being elated with Spring scenes and dancing for a while, I lost my raincoat.
White Seagul! Do not laugh at an old man in his dotage.
I was lost in enjoying such a beautiful scene of Spring blossoms.
While its counterpart in yeochanggagok(female song) is ¡¸Eollak¡¹ which is widely sung, the song has not been sung as a song of namchanggagok(male song). ¡¸Urak¡¹ is a pleasant song in ujo as its title shows.
6. Ujo Eollak ¡°Byeoksachangi¡±
When I saw a shadow at a window with blue silked curtains,
I thought it was my lover's and ran out to the yard,
but I can find not my lover but the moon lighting the garden,
and I realized it was a phoenix making its feathers tidy.
If it happened during the daytime, people would laugh at me.
This song is one of the most popular songs. Like ¡¸Urak¡¹, it has pleasant feature and also it is more vivid with many highlighting parts in high tune.
7. Banubangye Banyeop ¡°Samweolsamil¡±
The words of this song is same as those of ¡¸Urong¡¹.
¡¸Banyeop¡¹ beginning with ¡®Samweolsamil¡¯ is a special song with a sudden change from jungyeoeum four beats to the lowest tempo such as ¡¸Isudaeyeop¡¹. Also it starts from ujo and changes to gyemyeonjo in the final part. That's why it is called 'Banubangye(half-ujo and half-gyemyeonjo)'. These songs are designed to play a bridging role between two types of songs.
8. Banubangye Pyeollak ¡°Namudo¡±
With any cases I cannot compare what I feel after losing my love:
A hen chased by a hawk;
A captain facing with a group of pirates amid raging waves and to make things worse he lost a key of his boat which is fully loaded, on a foggy day.
This song is also sung in banubangyejo. In terms of its speed and length, this ¡¸Pyeollak¡¹ has different structure. In terms of speed, during the first three chapters it starts from speedy tempo but in the fourth chapter, it shows sudden slow tempo and from the fifth chapter it goes back to the initial tempo. Concerning the length, it is 16 beats in daeyeoeum, changes into 10 beats in the beginning part, and in the middle of the third chapter, hourglass drum beating changes with beating at the middle of the drum. Thus this song can be a bridge in linking two different songs with 16 beats and 10 beats.
9. Gyemyeonjo Chosudaeyeop ¡°Cheongseongryeong¡±
We have passed Cheongseoknyeong, where is Chohagu?
Along with cold wind from the North, it is raining torrentially.
Is there anybody to draw my portrait and send it to my lover?
This poem describes deep sorrow of a young prince(Prince Bonglim, the 17th king of Joseon) who once a hostage to be taken to Qing dynasty. Its title, ¡¸Chosudaeyeop¡¹ has two pieces in a form of namchanggagok(male song). This is the firstly sung piece among other songs in gyemyeonjo and like ¡¸Chosudaeyeop¡¹ in ujo, musicians play 'dasereum' instead of 'daeyeoeum'.
10. Gyemyeonjo Pyeonsudaeyeop ¡°Jingukmyeongsan¡±
A nation's pride, the Great mountain, Manjangbong is standing over the sky in a shape of golden lotus flower.
That rocky mountain is one of the main mountains, Mt. Samgak.
That mountain with extraordinary rocks to the South is Jamdobong(Mt. Nam).
Naksan is a left guardian, blue dragon, Mt. Inwang is a right guardian, white tiger.
Auspicious energy coming from the sky covers the Royal Palace,
and fine energy of Hanyang produces many heroes and geniuses.
My country in the far East is ever-lasting strong castle which has strong defensive capacity and peaceful culture and courteous traditions.
Every year it achieves good harvest,
In September when tinted leaves colours all over the nation, fabulous and auspicious beasts such as a giraffe and a phoenix are playing and dancing.
After I fully ate and drank with looking at the top of Mt. Bukak, I took a walk around Seoul and deeply appreciate our King's favor.
This is a kind of a song in praise of city of Seoul. In particular, it says that Seoul's scenic beauty and this peaceful reign are owe King's generous favors.
Every song with 'pyeon(øº)' in its title consists of 10 beats music instead of ordinary 16 beats music, it is more speedy than other musical forms, and it takes saseolsijo with no restrictions on the length of the first two verses rather regular formed sijo.
11. Gyemyeonjo Eonpyeon ¡°Hansongjeong¡±
Cutting tall pine trees at Hansongjeong, I made a small boat.
The boat carries liquor bottles, various musical instruments and musicians, mother of pearl inlaid cigarette pipes and tinder, and paper pouches, girls from Gangneung and Samcheok to Gyeongpodae.
After drinking, we will flow to Chongseokjeong, Geumran cave, Yeongnang lake and Seonyudam as we like.
This song seems that like ¡¸Pyeonsudaeyeop¡¹ it has speedy tempo of 10 beats music. It starts from shouting in a high tone and shows more exciting feature than ¡¸Pyeonsudaeyeop¡¹ as its lyrics represent.
12. Gyemyeonjo Taepyeongga
Peace reigns over here
Peace reigns over there
Yo is at peace and Sun is also at peace.
So are we so let's enjoy the blessing of peace
This is the only song of mixed chorus by male and female singers. Both singers sing by turns in the beginning part and finally sing together at the final part. As the title shows(Taepyeongga: peace song), this song is sung in somewhat slow tempo. In the beginning, the both singers sing in similarly high tunes but it changes into different tunes from time to time. This feature reminds us the annual meeting of beautiful couple, Gyeonu and Jiknyeo at Ojakgyo bridge. In other words, like its annual meeting both singers meet at a similar tune and like the couple's separation they goes to different tunes. Accordingly this song shows dynamic aspects in changing its tunes.

CD2 - Gasa, Sijo
1. Gasa Jukjisa(ñÓò«Þò)
The sky and the earth never get old and so does the moon(namely, the nature is perpetual and the moon in the sky also ever-lasting)
It is only one hundred years that I have lived in such a lonely place. (It is only a hundred years for me to live in this beautiful place)
(refrain) Eohuiyo Ihuiyo Ihuiyaeo
Ilsimjeongnyeom(ìéãýïñÒ·) Geuknaknammua(пեÑõÙíä¹)
A-eu-a-heo-aaaa It is Misang(Ú¯ßÀ) Yaruna
I opened a window while I was reading,
There is a seagull in the sky
(retrain) same as the previous.
It is called ¡¸Geongonga(ËëÍÞÊ°)¡¹, each chapter has meaningless refrain and usually consists of four chapters. The singer sings only two chapters among the original four chapters. Since China also had ¡¸Jukjisa¡¹, a form of Akbu(äÅݤ)1), Korea also borrowed the name of ¡¸Jukjisa¡¹ singing beautiful scenary and traditions. Lyrics of each chapter have nothing with each other. The key point of the lyrics are repetitive melody rather than the meaning of them.
2. Gasa Eobusa(åÛÝ«Þò)
There lived a white haired old man.
He thought to live near to the water is better than to the mountain.
Jigukchongjigukchong(ò¸ÏÒõ¿ò¸ÏÒõ¿) Eosawa(åÚÞÙèÂ) refrain of Eobusa to encourage exciting mood
A fisherman on a boat got excited.(in other words, to live in a remote place without any concerns and competitions in the world. It makes me dance in excitement.)
Let the boat go, let the boat go.(followed by the same refrain)
Morning tide is going out and evening tide is coming in.
It is pleasantly windy over trees.
A crane next to some red flowers, seems to enjoy its freedom.
Raise anchor, raise anchor.
There is a ship in lake Dongjeong.
Jigukchongjigukchong Eosahwaheoni
As soon as the ship is passing the front hill, a back hill is standing in front of me.
The only thing I am interested in is nothing but fishing.
I cannot exchange this beautiful natural scenery with the highest rank in the government.
Unfurl a sail, unfurl a sail.
Owing to windy rain, I stopped fishing.
Jigukchongjigukchong Eosahwaheoni
I can find life steps in natural environment.
This is the oldest gasa song among the existing twelve pieces and also according to the oldest gasa collection, ¡ºAkjanggasa(äÅíñÊ°Þò)¡» also has Eobusa(boatman's song). Originally it has eight chapters but in this CD, the singer is singing only the forth chapter. Moreover, it is the only gasa which we can find that LEE Hyeonbo wrote this lyrics.
3. Pyeongsijo ¡°Cheongsalli¡±
Do not show off your speedy flows, streams!
Once you reach to the ocean, it is difficult to coma back to green mountains(once we get old, it is virtually impossible to come back to the times in our youth),
How about taking a short rest enjoying the full moon over the mountain!
A name of pyeongsijo(øÁãÁðà) was originated from that it has monotonous melody with not so high and low tunes. This is the firstly-introduced form of sijo among other different sijo. By disseminating pyeongsijo to local areas, hyangjesijo(úÁð¤ãÁðà) was derived from its root. LEE Byeongseong's Sijo is gyeongjesijo(ÌÈð¤ãÁðà) originated from Seoul area. One of the most distinctive features of gyeongjepyeongsijo there are some high-toned parts, seseong(falsetto) in the middle and final parts.
4. Jungheorisijo ¡°Cheonjiro¡±
Since we take the sky and the earth as our fence, the sun and the moon as our lamp and put water from the North Sea into out liquor pot, we do not realize how old we are even facing a star of the death messenger.
It is called ¡¸Banjireumsijo ¡¹ in seokamjesijo2) and although basically ¡¸Jungheorisijo¡¹ has a shouting part in the middle part, he created a kind of different style of jungheorisijo. As LEE Byeongseong's song proves, jungjeorisijo of hyeongjesijo shows a lot of similarities apart from a sudden high tone in the middle of the beginning part.
5. Jungheorisijo ¡°Insimeun¡±
Making a foundation of a house in a generous manner, setting up the main pillars in a faithful manner, and putting the roof and setting walls in a modesty and courteous manner,
I am sure any severe storms and natural disasters can not destroy this house.
6. Pyeongjireumsijo ¡°Dohwaihwa¡±
It has same lyrics with the previously introduced two songs, ¡¸Urong¡¹ and ¡¸Banyeonp¡¹. The title was ¡¸Pyeongjireumsijo¡¹but since jireumsijo has two versions: male song(namchang) and female song(yeochang), it seems reasonable to allocate this in namchangjireumsijo category. Basically, jireumsijo shows a high toned part in a shouting way just in the first part, and the other parts shows similar patterns to pyeongsijo's.
7. Pyeongjireumsijo ¡°Barama¡±
Please stop blowing, wind!
I am afraid that no leaves left from the front tree.
Pleas stop going, time!
It is no use to lament my beauty in my early age.
Since I know I can not be young forever, it is sorrowful.
This song says 'nothingness of the life'. According to announcer's comment saying "20 September 4291(1958 A.D.) in the beginning of the song, we can assume it is sung at his age of 50. namchangjireumsijo also has jeonghyeongsijo style but it prefers to sing rather more lyrics in its beginning part. In this sijo, the first part has nine alphabets. Only expressive melody of namchangjireumsijo can cover this rather long lyrics. If it had regular number of lyrics such as three or four, it is sung in a simple way like yeochangjireumsijo does.
8. Saseoljireumsijo ¡°Holmunchangoi¡±
A sudden sound of shaking bamboo trees might be my husband's foot steps.
Since it has long been to see him, he must be an ignorant man to see my painful feelings.
Hey, small boy, I can see a moon over our Haengnangchae, it seems he is coming.
Like the previous gagok, ¡¸Eollak¡¹ saying that a slight rocking of a window made the singer run out, when wind shakes bamboo trees, the singer reminded his long-missing lover and sang his touching and painful feelings.
This sijo has been recorded as ¡¸Saseoljireumsijo¡¹ but it is ¡¸Namchangjireumsijo¡¹. Its beginning part consists of namchangireumsijo's factors and its middle and final chapters show the same factors of pyeonsijo. Since the 2nd part of its final chapter has fifteen characters this part is sung densely but it is not typical feature of saseolsijo and still its basic structure is similar to pyeongsijo.
 
9. Saseoljireumsijo ¡°Haktago¡±
A boy playing a pipe with riding on a crane, you are wearing a colourful jacket and double topped hat with a bottle gourd and some herb for eternal life.
Please stop going for a while, I'd like to ask where you are going.
How many people were at a party of Yoji?
I say princess Nanyang, GEONG Gyeongpae, JIN Chaebong, GA Chunun, and JEOK Gyeonghong, GYE Seomweol, SIM Hyoyeon, and BAEK Neungpa from Habuk.
This saseoljireumsijo was transmitted when YM Gijun, the predecessor of HA Gyuil taught four gasa and sijo at Yiwangjikaakbu and JANG Sahun, one of the students who learned them, delivers musical notes of twenty pieces3) of saseoljireumsijo. The current system is what JANG Sahun taught LEE Yanggyo.
As we can assume that like namchangjireumsijo and saseoljireumsijo has a loud beginning in high tunes and in particular, the beginning and the middle parts of saseoljireumsijo has very unique feature using neck sound violating ordinary sijo music. Also in terms of its length, unlike saseolsijo, the more characters there are, the more flexible beats such as five beats or eight beats we have.
This sijo increased eight beat so has 5.8.8.8.5.8 beats in the beginning part, and shows unique feature of harmony between masculine in using loud voice in a shouting way and some features of soft rhythms. In the middle part, it is same as 'Dong' part of pyeongsojo(ordinary sijo) and the final part shows its own beauty. For instance seokamjesijo's No. 3 and 4 part of the first chapter consist of semachi rhythm and it is called as ¡¸Yeokkeumjireumsijo¡¹.
